On October 3, 2011, I went to Kleban Furniture to order a custom dining room table and six chairs.  I brought a sample drawer from a server which we planned on matching as closely as possible. The salesman helped us choose a sample finish from a choice of many. It was a pretty close match.  We ordered the furniture and left a 50% deposit by check ($3700 full price). The check was cashed.  When the furniture arrived, it was many shades too light (not like the sample), so I refused delivery.  A few days later, we went to the store, only to be told that it was the lighting that made the furniture look different. The only thing that the store could do, was to re-order the furniture with a 50% restocking fee to the manufacturer.  Kleban refuses to return our deposit and claims that there is nothing else that they can do.

Kleban has answered Ripoff Report the same way that they answered The Better Business Bureau, The New York State Department of Consumer Affairs, and The New York State Attorney General's Office.  They are consistent with that.  They have yet to explain the discrepancy show by the picture taken in their place of business.  In the picture is a draw that was taken as a sample for the best color match, a sample chip of wood from one of their furniture suppliers, and a chair that was attempted to be delivered to our home.  The draw and the sample from the furniture manufacturer are quite close, and the chair from the attempted delivery is no where close to either.  Kleeban claims that it is due to lighting, but the chair (and the rest of the order) looked terrible in both their store, and in our home.  They were kind enough to offer to re-order a different color, with a 50% re-stocking fee to us, due to either their error, or the error of the furniture manufacturer.  The original report contains a picure of the furniture involved.

Kleban Furniture not telling the truth!

The pictures supplied tell the truth about the furniture ordered from Kleban.  One of the pictures shows the drawer taken as a sample (the finish is not in any way oxidized).  In that same picture is a sample of the wood chosen, which quite closely resembles the drawer.  Also in that picture is a chair which Kleban tried to get us to accept as being close to their sample.  Anyone can clearly see that the chair is no where near the color of either the draw, or their sample of wood.

Kleban has told the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs, the Better Business Bureau, and the New York State Attorney General's Office, that what they tried to deliver was close to the sample chosen, but the difference is due to lighting.

No one should ever have to accept anything that is not even close to what they have ordered.  Checking online, there have been other customers who have had similar experiences with Kleban.  Besides not checking first, our only other mistake was not to use a credit card to make an initial payment.

The complaint the customer posted is not justified.   The customer purchased a custom dining set.  They choose the shape size fabric, and the finish (the set comes in over 100 finishes).  They were trying to get close to match the finish of a buffet that is very old, and the finish is oxidized.  Upon delivery that did not like the way the set looked and refused delivery.  They came into the store and we verified that the finish they choose is what was delivered, and they agreed to accept re delivery, when we went to redeliver they would not open the door so we took it back, and the customer would not answer their phone when we tried to call.  Since the set is a custom set the manufacturer charges a 50% restock fee plus freight which came out to more than the deposit left.  Since 1950 we try our best to satisfy our customers, and I always try to be fair in similar situations.
