During a lengthy in-person interview for what appeared to be a consistent position with Learning Sciences International as a makeup artist and stylist contractor, Maggie Connell repeatedly and pervasively requested trade secret application techniques and product information while giving the impression that such information was being given only in anticipation of a forthcoming business relationship where money would be paid for makeup, hair and wardrobe services for video shoots and training.

Over the course of the interview, it became clear after her repeated attempts to "pump me for information" that she was only after whatever professional tips, trade secret techniques and methods she could obtain and use; and had no intention of hiring any professional artist for the purposes she asserted in the interview.  Shortly after I refused to divulge any more information, the interview was concluded and I left Learning Sciences International.

Quite some time passed and I had not heard a rejection nor confirmation of the relationship contemplated as I had been told. Upon my initiation of contact with Maggie Connell, I was disappointed but not at all surprised to discover my services were not required.

It is clear to me that Maggie Connell acted unethically and dishonestly.  Not only did they waste my time, and that of others I can only imagine whom interviewed as I did, but this is one more of within my learned profession that may not find work because of her apparent dishonest and unethical behavior.  Independent Contractors beware!

Another consultant hired for this position

AUTHOR: Gail Shepherd - (United States of America)

POSTED: Wednesday, August 08, 2012

This position was for a hair and makeup consultant for our video teams. Learning Sciences International does conduct lengthy in-person interviews to determine a candidate's level of expertise and personality traits for a good company fit. There was no deliberate attempt during this interview to obtain trade secrets. It may be that because we are an education company, the interviewer did not realize that the in-depth questions she was asking would be seen by the candidate as "pumping for information." In fact, as Learning Sciences International is an education company, not a hair salon, the company would have no reason to obtain any trade secrets related to make-up. As noted, the company did hire another candidate, based on price quote, personality, and expertise. A polite exchange of emails confirmed this hire for the person who is filing this complaint. The relationship was well within the scope of what is widely considered professional behavior during a search for a suitable candidate for any position. 60+ employees would all be happy to confirm that Learning Sciences is a wonderful place to work. We regret we cannot hire every candidate who applies.
