I called the phone number listed on a website for a residential lock issue dealing with a tiny 0.17 cu. ft. safe/lock box that I could not open. The batteries went dead for the keypad and I did not have the key to open it. On the front was the spot for a key to go in to open the box.
I explained all this to the guy on the phone and verified that it would be a $15 service call. I asked if their was a location I could take the box too since it is very samll and he told me "no." I went over pricing since it was a small item and vertified that price would start at about $30. Guy said it dependd on how complicated and big of an issue it would be to open the lock. He gave me a time when a person would call and come to my home.
The guy arrived in a fancy car and I discussed why he didn't have a service truck with a sign on it. He was laughing most of the time and said he didn't need it since he just had some tools in the trunk of his car. He had a very thick accent so I had to have him repeat everything he said numerous times.
I had my box in the garage for him to look at. I explained that I had called the number on the website and asked him why they didn't have a location that I could have brought my box too since it is so small. He said they didn't need to have a location since most calls were to places where people were located.
I went over the $15 price listed on line and how much it said it should cost to open it, about $30.The guy picked up the box and said he'd have to break it open. I told him how ridiculous that was and that all he needed to do was pick the lock and if I had the tools I could do it. It took some convincing but he took out a tiny kit from his pocket and picked the lock in a few seconds.
I didn't see what he was writing on the bill but it wasn't on any company leterhead form just a slip from a booklet that you can buy at a dollar store. He wrote down $19.99 serice call and other $140 for a total of $159.99. I complained and he said he got to decide how much it would cost. He made some other comments too making it clear he could charge what he wanted.I charged the bill.
Immediately after he left I called the number from the website and asked to discuss this with a supervisor. The guy on the phone took my number and said someone would call me back in a lttle while since they were all at a meeting. Needless to say no ever called back.
On another day I called back and the woman who picked up was very rude when I started to explain the issue. She started yelling. When I told her she was being rude I asked for a supervisor she said she was one. When I asked for another supervisor she hung up on me.
