Stay away from the Gulf station at 114 E Main St, Marlborough, MA.  The owner is nasty to his employees, and customers.

Aside from the times I've heard him berating his employees in the store, and previous times I've tolerated his rudeness, I'll just tell you what happened to me around 4:30 pm on 03/05/2013.
Running short before payday, I went in with a handful of dimes to make a small purchase.  The owner refused to accept my money, explaining that it is too much trouble for him to count all the change at closing time.  He then directed me to walk to the bank across the street, where I can trade my dimes for bills.

Now this is a busy street at a busy intersection, and there were piles of snow to circumvent.
You should also know that I am physically disabled.  My feet and legs just don't get me around so well anymore.  He knows this because I have been a customer there for more than a year now; often asking a friend to make the walk for me.

He is telling me that I should trek over to the bank and back, to save him from counting 75 extra dimes at the end of the day.
Am I wrong to be upset?

I did as he said, and walked to the bank.  Now this bank (TD Bank) also refused the dimes, but that's a whole other rant.  I went back to the Gulf station at 114 E Main St, and explained that they also refused my 75 dimes.

With much complaining, he agreed to take the dimes, but continued to rant about how I was putting him out.  With that, I had enough, and told him to forget it.  I had a few words for him before I left, and I will NOT go back.

Update on my complaint

In the interest of fairness, I need to make a change with this complaint.

I recently found out that the person I was complaining about, is NOT the owner!

He is actually the manager, and his name is Sam.  He did not have a name tag.  At the time, I believed him to be the owner.  I asked him if he was the owner, he confirmed that he was.

He did not give me his name.

I understand that a Gulf Oil representative spoke with the owner about this complaint, and Sam was reprimanded.

I still haven't been back, but I do occasionally ask a friend to pick something up for me.  I just don't feel comfortable about going myself.  Anytime I feel up to a walk, I would rather walk all the way down to Marlborough Market.  The manger, and employees there are always friendly, and willing to help anyway they can.  They are happy to accept any denomination of cash, (bills or change), and have always treated me with respect.

Semantics and Misconceptions

If you are going to argue semantics, buy a dictionary, or at least learn to use an internet search engine.  Now of course, you will tell me that an engine can't be used on the internet, because an engine is a mechanical device used to power vehicles and equipment.

The word "currency", has been used for thousands of years to describe methods of payment; including coin, paper currency (hmm), and bank notes, and bank drafts.

As for the IRS, I have to wonder if you have ever paid them anything.  When you do, please tell me how it worked out for you when you try to pay with anything other than a check or money order.

I will stand by my previous whiny complaints, and apologize to you for having to wait in line.

Actually, the misconception is yours.

   I seriously doubt that you have ever checked.  For the record, your dimes are not currency, they are coinage.    Try to pay your taxes to the IRS in loose dimes and you'll quickly find that even the government that created them is not required to accept them as payment.

   Your clue should have been that two gas stations and even a bank refused your dimes.   That is because a large quantity of loose dimes has to be counted and assembled into rolls before they are anything more than a hassle.    

   As for your comments about the owner's nastiness to employees and customers, I think the previous poster was spot on.   If it were actually true or significant, it is unlikely that you would have been a regular customer.   After all, the owner eventually did agree to accept your useless change when no one else would. 

  So, after all of your whining, the guy agrees to accomodate you and then you decide to leave in a huff AND write a ripoff report?     I guarantee you that you will not be missed at that store.    If I were a customer there, I would also be relieved that I would not be required to wait behind you in line while 75 dimes were counted out.

Misconceptions about disibilities

Bob,
It appears that you, like may people have misconceptions about the disabled.  There are many types and levels of disability, and many of us are able to work part time.  I never said I can't walk, only that it is difficult for me to get around.  The medications I take keep me from driving, and as I stated I often ask a friend to go for me.  This particular day, I was feeling up to a short walk down to the corner Gulf station/convenience store.

As I only had the dimes, I didn't want to put the task onto a friend; especially given the attitude of this man.  For example; one of my friends was recently berated and cursed at, for using $2 in quarters along with some bills.

Now the last time I checked, nickles, dimes and quarters are still US currency.  This man decides how to price his products, and chooses to price them as some dollar amount and some change (1.95, 3.59, 2.79, etc).  This is how items are usually priced everywhere, and not even dollar amounts.  So a retail operation like this, inherently accumulates some amount of coin to count.  This is part of doing business with the public.

As long as we still use cash, and don't have exactly even dollar amounts, coin change is going to be a part of the process.  By the same logic, if he is giving me change from a purchase, I can't choose the denomination of the payout either.  If he is out of dollar bills, he can give me nickles, dimes and quarters instead.  After all, it's still the same amount of money, it has the same value, and is legal tender to use there, or at any other store.

- Yet you were still able to make it to this store, and apparently you are well enough to work since you say you are a little short before your next payday.  I wonder what was such a life/death item at a convenience store that you would even risk going across the street in the first place to get actual dollar bills.

With much complaining, he agreed to take the dimes, but continued to rant about how I was putting him out.  With that, I had enough, and told him to forget it. 
- Oh wait..so you complain, actually risk life and limb in crossing the street, and then complain some more.  But when he finally says he will take the dimes you just say forget it?

and I will NOT go back.
- If I had a dime(ha ha ha) for every time I heard that I could actually retire from my job.  I bet you will be back within the month.  After all by your own words you state you have seen him berate his employees...yet you still return.  You say he is nasty to his customers..yet you still returned.  So yes..you will be back.
