I treated myself to a massage at the local Massage Envy because it was close to my house last January. There was another woman who was waiting and while the both of us were checking in, the sales pitch started. The employee said that the membership guarenteed a massage every month, but NEVER said that you couldn't cancel the membership in the first year. The employee never said that it would be a pain to cancel or that you were locked in, nothing. It is a TOTAL SCAM! She just went on and on about how great it is and what a treat for yourself, blah, blah, blah...

Then the woman customer and the employee got into a conversation, so I read over the contract and I SWEAR I don't remember reading in the fine print that you can't cancel in the first year. So like an idiot, I signed up and here I am. Stuck with a lame membership I don't want for bad massages I can't afford. So I called and asked what I needed to do to cancel, and they said I couldn't cancel until my year was up. I argued with the peon on the phone then asked to speak to the manager, but they wouldn't let me. Finally I put my account on hold for six months.

Now the six months is up and I am at it again arguing with Massage Envy about cancelling my FRAUD membership. I have changed my credit card number so at least they can't charge my card anymore and I have written them a cancellation letter, but they are being total jerks about it and I am afraid that they will hurt my credit. I have also contacted the BBB, but I am surprised that Massage Envy is being so rigid about a customer that hates them so much. What a horrible, horrible company. DON'T EVER DO BUSINESS WITH THEM! THEY ARE THE WORST COMPANY!!!

Thats how they operate?

AUTHOR: Beth - (United States of America)

First, Doug and Beth Jensen were not the owners of Massage Envy, Vadnais Heights during the time period of "Dirts Rocks" issue in 2009.
Secondly, Jennifer I am sorry your experience working at Vadnais Heights was so terrible.  A sales position in our company just as in any company requires the person hired to actually sale something.
Still today I stay in contact with previous employees who worked for us and I am sure would disagree with the comment that  I am a "slave driver".  Through out the years we had several employees leave due to personal reasons only later to come back to work for us because they enjoyed the environment.
Lastly, we appreciated our clients and I am positive they still do in Vadnais Heights to this day.
I wish you luck in your future endeavors.
Beth

That's how the operate

As a former employee of ME, I have to agree with the original poster. I have seen people fired because they would not do a hard sell of the membership. In fact, one owner, Beth Jensen of the Vadnais Heights ME is brutal to people who don't do what she expects. In my time there, I saw her arrogance in all of its glory. Not only did she call clients idiots or make comments about them not being educated, she also treated her staff like slaves. All she cares about is making money, keeping her drunk husband of the road, and if her fake b***s are going to deflate. She'll lay it on thick and then when the client walks out the door, she will rip on them. She has been quite successful with creating an army of "mini mes" to sell. Keep in mind that their job depends on you buying, if not, don't be surprised if you don't see them the next time you come in. The atmosphere may seem great to an "outsider" but those who work there will tell you differently. Save your money and someone's job and find a solo therapist. All you are doing is lining Doug and Beth Jensen's pockets so that they can continue to treat people like dirt!

I just went to Massage Envy myself in Southlake TX

Not only was there NO SALES pitch while waiting, they did not mention the membership program until I went to pay for it after the massage was completed.

I had the choice of paying the introductory charge of $39 without a membership or the pay $49 and start a membership. I chose NOT to start a membership at the time but am considering it in the near future. I am actually waiting for a new facility to open closer to my home before I do the membership program. I will make sure to ask about cancellation policy before I do sign up for it.

There was no Sales Pitch - or any pressure to sign up for a membership.

You claimed bad massages - have you seen the same therapist all the time or have you had other therapists too? If you do not like a therapist you can ask for different ones until you find one you like. You can also go to other locations with your membership.
