Please understand before you read this that I am NOT claiming that MasterCard Corporation "ripped me off".

My issue is that I receive two different MasterCard gift cards for Christmas:  one for $100.00 and one for $200.00.

I registered them online and made some online purchase on the $100.00 MC.  Later I went to a pharmacy and made a small purchase of a couple of dollars and told the casheir I was not sure of the balance on my two cards and that if the computer did not accept the one card due to have no balance I would use the other card.  Well the computer accepted the first card I used so I assumed the balance was okay.

So later I went to a discount fashion store and made a purchase and did the same things: I tried the one card to see

if it had enough balance with the intent to use the other card if the POS computer did not accept the first gift card. But the POS computer did accept the card so again I assumed the balance was okay but figured at this point that I probably had just about used up the balance on the $100.00 card so quit using it before I even checked my balance.

When I did check my balance on the $100.00 MC gift card via the phone number, the recording said I was negative

$13.00 dollars which rather freaked me out because this was a gift card I was using--not a bank checking account that can be overdrawn. From my past experience using many MC gift cards, if there are not funds to cover a purchase at a POS or online, the card is rejected.  This has never happened before.

So now, unintentionally I owe MC this $13.00 which is not earh shattering, but they need to improve their computer system to make sure it rejects gift cards that have no balance.

Clarifying My Original MC Report

AUTHOR: Jo Anne Vandegriff - ()

POSTED: Saturday, December 27, 2014

The reason I reported MasterCard to the public via RippedOff Reports was NOT to accuse them, at this point, of defrauding or ripping me off.  I wanted to alert the publc that there apparently is a bug in the MasterCard computer system that is accepting payments at least at POS machines (and possibly for online purchases) when there are insufficient funds on gift cards.

I do not know how many other MC giftcard holders had this same thing happen:  that the POS machine that connects to MasterCard database was allowing purchases on gift cards without sufficient funds left and leaving a negative balance on non-refundable gift cards.

This situation is bizarre in that I have never heard of a gift card generating a negative balance before, eventhe refundable type of gift cards--why would any finance company allow a gift card to run up a negative balance.

So either MC has instituted a new computer program that has bugs or it is being hacked into.  Also, when I called the sort of toll-free number for MC, the computer voice stated I had $5.00 left on the other "good" card I had and stated that after I called twice, but when I check my account balance on-line, it states that I have $17.50 left which is more the correct amount.

The card activity tab for both gift cards is correct, though.  But those who currently have MC gift cards should keep careful track of your balances and report anything wrong immediately to MC.

Im sorry but what YOU want is THEM to THINK FOR YOU!!!! You even state in your own post THAT YOU DID NOT CHECK THE BALANCE!!! So automatically YOU have already screwed up. STOP trying to make EVERYONE ELSE do your thinking for YOU!!!! Youre not a HUMAN at that point, you are a PET!!!!! WHAAAA!! WHAAAA!!!!! Due to the Christmas season and the over abundance of cards being used, YOU ended up with an issue. Big deal!!!! Its NOT so earth shattering of an issue!!! MasterCard IS NOT the company that is using this system!!!! It was the MERCHANT SERVICES that takes care of each of those stores who authorized the spending, NOT MASTERCARD!!!!! DO you REALLy think MasterCard wants to have ANY types of overdrafting?!?!?! By the time a refusal came back YOU were LONG GONE!!!!! So since the individual companies who handled the individual stores card processing requests screwed up it MUST be MASTERCARDS fault!!! Yea really adult of you. All YOU show is your ignorance of HOW cards are processed. No ripoff here because the poster CANT point the fingers at those ACTUALLY responsible.
