We purchased a new Maytag washer from a local dealer (Maidencreek TV & Appliances) in 2011. It was delivered and installed on 1/11/11. We are a senior couple and do 2-3 loads of wash per week.

On 8/21/13 the washer developed a problem. I called the dealer first thing the next morning and was told after describing the problem that the washer needed a new timer. One of the service people had a death in the family so they could not provide service until the afternoon of 8/24. The serviceman arrived, listened to my description of the problem, turned on the washer and said it need a timer. I said go ahead and install it. He then told me that he didn’t have one and since the person who orders parts does work Saturdays it would not be ordered until Monday and could take a week or more to arrive. He then expcted me to pay him $99.99 for the service call. I told him that since the problem had been diagnosed during my initial phone call that I expected him to arrive with the part and fix the washing machine.

I later got a call from the dealer saying that someone would call me Monday and let me know when the part would arrive. Still waiting for that call. She also told me that

The cost of the part          $180.54

cost of the service call       $ 99.99

  cost to install                   $ 40.00

    total                             $320.53

    sales tax                      $  19.24

      grand total                  $339.77

It is still unknown how long we will have been without the use of the washer.

The washer is only 2 1/2 years old and has been lightly used.

The total cost of the repairs is more than the initial cost of the washer ($301.99 after tax and $175 rebates).

Our previous washer lasted 11 years and had zero service calls.

So you tell me . . . would you ever buy Maytag again?

. . . would you ever buy from that dealer again?

It got Even worse

The dealer suggested I call Maytag. When I did (wasting another 1/2 hour) she took down all my info, put me on hold then came back and said," Here's what I can offer you. I can schedule an appointment for a tech to come out and diagnose your problem for Out of Warrenty service for which you will be charged."  I told her she had obviously not been listening since two people had already told me what the problem is. Why would I pay a 3rd person to tell me again?

Maidencreek tech was finally scheduled to come and replace the timer on 8/29. He even called and said he was coming. then an hour later he called back and said he just found out that they could not replace the timer unless they also replaced the load sensor switch - another $150+.

So you can imagine where I told them to put the timer. Then went shopping at a different store for a new washer not made by Maytag/Whirlpool/Amana. What every happened to Maytag washers made so well that the Maytag repairman had nothing to do? Maybe he has nothing to do because parts are so expensive that it just does not pay to fix them no matter how quickly they break. Here's hoping we have a better experience with the GE washer on it's way.
