In may of 2001 I took our 97 camry LE back to the dealer because of a smoking problem I had when starting the car in the morning. The car did not smoke at any other time.

The service supervisor siad he thought it was bad fuel injectors and I told him I thought it was bad valve stem seals. He insisted on changing the injectors and while doing so he also changed the spark plugs. I picked the car up a week later, took it home and the nest morning upon starting it there was smoke. Icalled the service manager who said the smoke was caused by the additive he put in the gas tank and it would stop after the tank was refilled with fuel.

The car continued to smoke so I took it back in and the service manager decided I was right about the valve seals and changed them. The car did not smoke again until may of 2002 at which time I was given an appointment for July to have the car inspected. When I took the car in I was told nothing could be found that would cause the smoking. I insisted it was the valve stem seals agian but the dearler would not cover the cost because the one year warrenty ran outin June. I wanted to sell the car but could not sell it with the smoke so I had it fixed to the tune of $1000.00. I wrote Toyota corp about the situation but have not heard from anyone. My next step is small claims court.

BAD FUEL INJECTORS ...INTERESTING!!

AUTHOR: Charlene - ()

POSTED: Tuesday, October 01, 2002

Your post caught my eye on a number of accounts. First, it sounds like you indeed have the "sludge syndrome." Secondly, you are NOT the first to tell of the need for new fuel injectors. I think there is more to this in relation to the sludge matter.

For some time, I have had excessive fuel in my engine's oil. There are only a finite number of possibilities for the cause of this. One of them is leaking fuel injectors. I have been told that there isn't anything wrong with these injectors, however. Still, many owners have had them replaced in the course of the sludge problem. This replacement apparently does not solve the problem, however.

Could you give us more details about your case? Could you talk about the mileage and the symptoms you had prior to the repairs made initially and the repeat problem?

Do a google.com search for "Toyota Sludge" to find the history of the issue, including all the Toyota owner postings. This matter has been evolving for over two years now. Many folks are openly attacking those of us who speak out about the matter. Others are using illegal means to sever the ties of the networking owners. One only has to ask, "WHY?" Simple....obvious....the problem is far beyond the scope admitted by Toyota. If this were not the case, no one would have bothered to take the drastic measures taken to date.

Roxanne, continue to send owner stories to me. I will collect them and use them as needed to inform others. Encourage other Toyota owners to do the same. This matter is too public at this point to be buried by those who wish to say it is a HOAX or just the Toyota owners' fault. Think of how ridiculous this claim looks to even the casual observers now!

I highly encourage ALL sludge victims to write first to Toyota via certified letter (ask for a return response). Then, take the time to find the postings with resources on this matter and notify all the appropriate agencies, including the NHTSA, CAS, the EPA, etc. While the problem is already well-documented, more is needed to CONVINCE Toyota that this is NOT an owner problem; it is FAR MORE than that!

Call Toyota Corporate!

AUTHOR: Roxanne - ()

POSTED: Monday, September 30, 2002

Hi,

Not sure if this will get you any help but here are some numbers of Toyota Corporate.

Try Bruce Ertmann at Toyota Corporate (310)468-4000 just ask for him and they will connect you.

Also is the smoke white? or blue? If it is blue you may be experiencing the symtoms of engine gel, the much dreaded engine gelation causes blue smoke on start up in the morning.

If you think that you may have engine gel the dealer in some cases have not disclosed engine gel to customers. I would suggest taking your car to an independent mechanic that has no interest in hiding Toyota's dirty little secret.

If it does turn out to be engine gel then call Josh Batie (310)468-6891. He has helped some other people that I know of in getting repairs paid for.

Did you get your letter pertaining to engine gelation? Your car is covered you know. If you haven't gotten your letter then I would ask Toyota Corporate why that is.....

Good luck. I feel your pain........
