SEO Reputation Management at its best!

I caution anyone using the "MDjunction" website to be aware that it is being used to disseminate false and misleading information about a device called the "calmare" -- aka "MC-5A," "scrambler therapy," and "TEMPR."

The device itself is nothing but a TENS device that is being marketed by a near bankrupt company called "Competitive Technologies." They are a publicly traded company -- symbol "CTTC" -- and have files available for viewing on the SEC/Edgar website. You can read extensive public discussion of the company on the "investorshub" website.

The company itself makes outrageous claims about the device's miracle pain killing capabilities. However, the only blinded, randomized, controlled study of it was just released at the ASCO meeting a month ago and demonstrated the device had ZERO effect on pain and its results were, in fact, no different from a "nontheraputic" sham.

In the company's recently released annual report, they indicated that they only managed to sell twelve of the devices in the entire year of 2012. This is despite the alleged miracle pain killing properties and despite the fact that the company has been promoting the device for over four YEARS.

The therapy is very expensive -- 2500 to 5000 dollars -- and is not covered by insurance or Medicare.

Although I could write a book about the activities the company has engaged in, those interested can review comments on the "investorshub" website referred to above.

In this post, I'm primarily concerned that CTTC has engaged individuals to populate various pain discussion forums with posts claiming alleged successful treatment.  I've endeavored to keep up with and respond with pertinent facts to such posts. I even managed to get one forum closed down entirely.

The name "MDjunction" implies some sort of "junction" of MDs. However, it is in no way associated with any MDs as it makes clear in its own description. In this particular case, a thread entitled "Calmare Therapy" was started in the "reflex sympathy dystrophy support group" with the usual over the top claims of miracle pain relief.

I reponded with my own analysis and provided links to relevant websites supporting my analysis. These were links to sites such as the FDA, "clinicaltrials" and various scientific journals.

My posts were criticized and promptly removed by a "group leader" going by the ID of "jrcrps."

But not only that, this group leader's reponse said that "Non-RSD posters who are here to hold a negative campaign against the calmare therapy will not be welcome and will be deleted."

How exactly the "group leader" is able to identify real RSD versus phoney RSD posters is beyond me.

I was able to contact someone with CRPS and convince them to join and post their own negative experience with the device but they were deleted as well.

It's clear that ANY negative comment will be deleted regardless of whether it's factual and regardless of whether it's from a "real" sufferer.

They also appear to engage in "bumping" -- posting trivia on the thread in an effort to keep it near the top of the discussion board.

In other words, the forum is NOT being used to share information but instead is simply an advertisement in the guise of a forum.

I will attempt to contact the Consumer Protection Agency and see if they can do anything about "mdjunction."

In the meantime, I warn chronic pain sufferers to beware of any comments regarding the calmare on the "mdjunction" website.

"Questions for vallan"???

AUTHOR: vallan - ()

No -- I don't have RSD and I don't see that's relevant to the issues of fraud surrounding the calmare device.

No -- I don't profit in any way from attacking Competitive Technologies and the calmare, although I admit I sometimes fall down laughing at the ineptitude and ignorance sometimes displayed.

"oscarlonzo"??? I believe they were a country music duo best known for their hit song, "I'm my own grandpa."

By the way, have you seen Competitive Technologies' addition of a Florida distributor, "victoryoverpain.com."

It's a subsidiary of something called "Zizion" -- a company run by someone called "Bruce Bertman."

Now the thing about Bruce is that he was convicted of FIFTEEN counts of FRAUD -- wire, mail, AND securities -- and sentenced to FIFTY ONE MONTHS in prison followed by three YEARS of supervised release because of his role in a stock FRAUD scheme.

He became a calmare distributor just about the time his supervised release expired.

Curiously, Competitive Technologies' southwest distributor is someone named "Tom Kocherans."

Tom was fined $50,000 and kicked out of the securities industry because of his role in a stock FRAUD scheme involving -- can you guess?

Why, none other than Competitive Technologies!!!

And now he works for the company! How about that?!

They say you can tell a lot about about someone by the company you keep, and  Competitive Technologies' tells you EVERYTHING you need to know about them and the calmare.

Questions for vallan

AUTHOR: SloRian - ()

Hi Vallan,

I'm SloRian; the person that started the discusion thread about Calmare on MDjunction and who has personal experience with Calmare.

I'm going to put together a post with some rebuttals shortly, but before I do that, I wanted to ask vallan 3 questions which I hope he will answer truthfully:

1.  Do you have RSD?

2.  Are you profiting in any way from going around to discussion boards and posting negative information about Calmare?

3.  Do you know someone going by oscarlonzo or lonzooscar?

Thank you.

"group leader" for hire?

AUTHOR: vallan - ()

This is a response to the "group leader" from mdjunction.

It's incredible that she says, "this is a support group for CRPS patients and their caregivers -- not for self-proclaimed bringers of truth..."!

Can anyone believe that someone would actually say something like that?

It's perfectly okay for anyone to go onmdjunction, claim they have CRPS, and then LIE thought their teeth in order to promote a quack medical device but if someone actually tries to provide the TRUTH about the device, then their posts must ALL be deleted and they must be kicked off of the forum.

Does that not tell you everything you need to know about the website?

For all practical purposes, they're providing free advertising for a therapy costing thousands of dollars.

But wait! Did I say "free" advertising?

In my own experience, very little comes "free" and I suspect the "group leader" wouldn't go to such extraordinary measures as deleting my comments and responding here if there weren't some finacial incentive somewhere.

#4 UPDATE Employee ..inside information

Incredibly misleading post about Calmare therapy

In the recent post "MDjunction.com Beware of con artists Internet", the poster again makes his mission clear.  I'm a group leader of the RSD section of MDJ, and am very familiar with Vallan's campaign.  He continued to post condescending things, often seeming to try to appear more aware of medical issues than he is.

This is a support forum for people with CRPS and their caregivers - not for self-proclaimed "bringers of truth" to join the forum and then post only about what a fraud Calmare is.  This is why he's no longer a member.

Now he's going to report the forum to the Consumer Protection Agency?!  PLEASE DO!  I'm sure they deal with weird requests all the time.

OTOH, the libelous statements about the forum and the poster stating his opinions as fact are probably actionable, but this guy's not worth it.
