I as a family member had a difficult time with the hospice Medicare benefit. Basically they are paying for DME and pain medicine, laxatives possibly BP meds . You give up your right to see other doctors or get second opinions. Once you sign up with a provider, they are the only ones who can bill medicare. Simple treatments that are non invasive will not be allowed and your family member can die from simple things like an infected finger. Their terminal disease won't be the thing that kills them. This is never explained to the family before they sign up. The provider is given a sum of money to take care of you and if you die sooner as opposed to later their profit is bigger. They don't want you to live longer! Be very careful if you sign up for Hospice. They will treat you like a loser-dead meat-because you are sick. They will let you starve to death without a feeding tube.They will let you become dehydrated. If you love your family member, don't get caught in this position.Don't sign up for hospice because you can get the same services under your medicare medical benefit and you get freedom of choice!
