1986 Mercedes 560 SEC sold to me as an excellent example of a 43,000 mile car. Was told car was in great condition with following caveats: leak at engine rear and valve cover, radio inop, tires weak. When car was shipped to me the tires had to be replaced before I drove it. I have driven it 340 miles...heres my list thats been done: tires ($700), rear hyd shocks ($670), tie rod ends ($320), strut tower rebuild ($140), new rebuilt transmission ($2235), new brakes ($560) and battery ($85).

Still to be done: Engine to be rebuilt (bad vacuum, timing chain gone, leaking everywhere ?$2000?), Interior consoles need replacing, wood included. Most of the switches are inop.

Vehicle needs to be painted, no less than 37 dents and scratches plus car has been hit hard on left rear(at least $3500). Glass needs to be replaced, front and back. Front bumper shocks squashed, body molding coming off. Mileage very suspect. Nobody could beat the living hell out of a car, this bad, in only 43,000 miles.

The dealer returned $1000 to me. As represented the vehicle was worth the price. In reality, worth about $6,000 less than I paid. Dealership has made it clear that it isn't their problem. Worst buying experience I've ever had in 40 years of conspicuous consumption.

I would never buy any Mercedes because they are (poorly) designed for Germany, let alone the USA. But your repair bills sound kinda reasonable, all things considered. $2K for a motor rebuild? Sounds pretty good.

The guys on Cartalk suggest hiring a mechanic to inspect any out-of-town used car prior to purchase. Cartalk even has 'the mechanics files' where you enter your zip code, or the zip code where the out-of-town used car is located, to get a list of mechanics found reliable by previous customers.

Maybe next time you should buy a Bently Arnage T and then you will know what a piece of junk any Mercedes is.

What can be done to avoid this

AUTHOR: Pedro - (U.S.A.)

I do pre purchase inspections for people all over the world. These people call me and tell me where the car is and I provide them with a report of the car. Some people out of ignorance or just being cheap they don't take advantage of this.

The only way to avoid this is by hiring a professional mechanic to check the car for you before you buy it. Period.

The cost os a ppi is nothing because ussually you can get money off the price thanks to the report.

Do not buy a car with out checking it first, specially out of town.
