Merchants Credit Guide has been leaving messages every evening for the past two weeks. I didnt even know to respond until I received their letter in the mail a couple of days ago. I first thought they were just a sales call. After receiving the letter which stated my husband had a old debt with CREDIT CARD COMPANIES OF AMERICA. They stated the debt was from 1992. I called them and asked them which credit card company, what was this debt for. They would not answer me, instead they stated that my husband would have to send a dispute in writing to get more information. I have not yet sent that because I do not want them to get any more info from us. We have had clear credit reports for the last five years and my husband does not remember any Credit Card from 13 years ago, least of all not one with that high of a charge. I am unsure if we should respond.

#2 Consumer Suggestion

Hello Gary, Do not panic! Help is out there!

AUTHOR: RB - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, September 06, 2005

Greetings Gary, On 8/28/05 I posted some information on this site you may find useful. You will need to respond in writing to MCG (Ken Hughes). I listed a website that should help with the letter you will need to write. The Staute of Limitations (SoL) has expired, legally they have no way of getting any $ out of you. But, you will need to dispute this debt (in writting) and it must be sent Certfied with a return receipt requested. If you do not respond, as your letter states, they will consider the debt valid. The SoL will be thrown out the window and start all over again. Do not acknowledge the debt, dispute it.
Good luck,

Tell them to take a hike

A debt that old -- even if real -- is long past the statute of limitations, and can't legally be collected on. I'd call and explain this to them.

If they refuse to stop, your best bet is probably to send them a certified letter asking that they cease and decist from attempting to contact you.
