Merchants' Credit Guide ripoff Chicago Illinois

My wife received a letter from merchants' credit guide co in July about a credit card she allegedly had under her maiden name from Chemical bank. It claimed she owed 6,428.66. She called them the next day and they did verify where she used to live but that the debt is over 10 years old. It does not show up on any credit report as a matter of fact we just got two car loans for over 60,000 and it never showed up.

Why would a company attempt to collect a debt that is over 10 years old and never show up any where? It is a total scam. It seems these people are getting names and addresses from drivers licenses and if you look at the letter there is no social security number any where on the letter to verify the person. As a matter of fact they never asked her to verify her identity especially since her maiden name is very common but they did know what town she was from. Very suspicious.
