April 2003 we bought a Cane Corso (Italian Mastiff) puppy from Merryfield Kennels for $1800. We do have papers on the dog, but of course cannot find any type of contact information for the original breeder - Crystal Sibbett. After speaking to true breeders of this puppy we found he does not meet the standards of this breed although he was sold as "show" quality - and we definetly paid show price even by honest, true Corso breeders prices. Luckily, we never had any intention of showing or breeding. False advertising on their part and obvious lack of breed knowledge by so-called "experts."
If his appearance had been our only problem! We got the dog home and discovered that the puppy had not received any shots since leaving the original breeder - putting the puppy 2 series behind in shots. We also discovered that the dog had mange which we were told had been transmitted to the puppy from his mother, but had gone UNTREATED for the month the dog was in possesion of Merryfield.
When confronted with these items, Merryfield administered the first series of vaccination shots - which we later found out is illegal as you must own the dog or be licensed to administer medical treatment!! Merryfield no longer owned the dog, WE DID, and they were/are not licensed to perform such medical functions. (Wouldn't a business that has been operating since 1961 be aware of such regulations??) The treatment of the mange required a series of shots over a number of months, but in the meantime left our puppy in pain and uncomfortable. Merryfield then paid for ALL of the mange treatments - no questions asked, which in my opinion is an admission of guilt.
We have found out through a number of local vets what happened to us is not uncommon operating practices for Merryfield Kennels. We knew what type of breeder would sell their dogs to these types of "kennels," but never imagined it would have been this bad.
Don't buy into their "guaranty" and all of the other "reasons" to buy a puppy from Merryfield Kennels. Not only are their prices OUTRAGEOUS, but they are not concerned in the least about the puppies that they sell. The bonus of having the puppy obedience class included with the puppy is a crock too. If you are really looking for a purebreed dog DO NOT buy from here. Invest some more time in finding a reputable breeder, you will get more concern and effort from them than Merryfield who sells dozens of nameless puppies per week.
