The editors at Metro Newspapers often delay your pay, discriminate against older and female freelancers, steal your ideas, credit themselves for your submitted work, pay you below the standard rate without notice, cut the standard pay rate without notice, and are generally abusive. Metro newsrooms are hostile working environments. The papers regularly violate local labor laws.
If you complain about the brutal working conditions, Metro will not give you work and try to enforce their confidentiality agreements. Newspapers are in the business of encouraging others to talk so it is hypocritical for them to try and enforce confidentialty agreements for their employees. In other example of their less than transparent behavior, several Metro employees refused to provide the name of the NY State Department of Labor employee that was auditing the company.
One of the city editors, who is no longer employed at Metro, would assign stories and then refuse to pay for the completed stories if he did not have space in the paper. [continued below]....
Metro features editor Rachel Vigoda would assign stories at the last minute, ask for you to work Memorial Day Weekend, and then discriminate against you when assigning regular work, According to Vigoda, her refusal was due to her preference to give her favorites regular work. Vigoda's friends would write a story about a cupcake bakeoff never mentioning that it was a benefit for a domestic violence charity. They would rarely score the big interviews.
Monica Weymouth, the previous features editor, also discriminated in the handing out of assignments but liked your work enough to assign your work every day when the news editor was on his honeymoon. To give you an idea of her mindset, she criticized a female journalist, who had filed a sexual discrimination lawsuit, in Philadelphia magazine. In the opinion, she supports newsrooms being bastions of chauvinism.
Under Metro Philadelphia editor Christine Paciolla, all of my articles, but one, had a mistake when published. One article spelled Lew with a instead of an e, a candidate for governor was described as running for mayor etc. Paciolla, who regularly wrote insulting, abusive emails, would assign a story, cancel it after you had completed the interview, and then change her mind and want the story immediately.
She would often undercut her freelancers with sources, the public and interview subjects. If the subject of your story complained when the coverage was less than fawning, she would take the subject's side without giving you the opportunity to respond.
Dorothy Robinson, the managing editor of Metro newspapers, condones this type of behavior and actually encourages it. She fires anyone that complains about the working conditions and then to silence their complaints by trying to enforce confidentiality agreements. She refused to look into the claims of discrimination in the distribution of assignments, the abuse of editor Christina Paciolla, the stealing of work by editors, and the double standards employed in the newsroom.
