On May the 27th my husband and i took our car into Midas for a simple oil change. After leaving the shop the oil light came on.
We turned the car around in order to head back to the shop.
On the way back to Midas the car just shut down on us and we were stranded. Thank God for cell phones because we were slightly away for the public. My husband opened the hood and checked the oil dipstick. It was dry!!!! Anyway I called the number on the receipt and asked for the manager (frantickly).
He agreed to come out and check out the problem. He looked under the hood and then under the car. He made the realization that the person that changed the oil did not replace the filter correctly. He offered us a ride and said he would have to get the car back to the shop, he also agreed to fix or pay for any damages associated with the matter. He drove the car back to the shop and called us 30 minutes latter saying that the matter was resolved. However just a few days later the oil light came back on. My husband took the car back to Midas and the claim to have reset the light. Fast forward on Saturday the 24th of June the oil light comes back on. Instead of taking the car back to Midas we decide to take someplace else. We thought that maybe it just needed another oil change then everything would be okay. Before the technician preceeds with the oil change he comes out and tells me that there is a problem. He said the the bearing were ruined and oil was not being sufficiently pumped to the engine.
So we would need new bearing , a new engine and other services. I was in shock. I reluctantly asked the price of all of that and he said 14,000 dollars. We donn't have 14,000 dollars!!! I said.
I explained the Midas situation to him and he said that, that is what caused it because once the car's oil light came on the first time the damages was already being done. So i called Midas asked to speak to that same manager C.F. He told me to have the technician write up an estimate and fax it to him and he would take care of it. This was before he new the price. Anyway once he saw the price he refused to let the car be repaired there. We disagreed at first and wanted the car to be repair where it already was. On week later Midas the owner George Murray still hadn't responded to our situation after many attempts to contact him. He said he would only do something for us if the car was back in his shop. So on Saturday July 1st we took it back to Midas. none of this was easy i had to have repeated shouti matches with this man before he attempted to do anything.
So now here I am today frustrated, angry, hurt and very disappointed in many things involving consumer rights. I have shed countless tears over this situation. I've only had my car for alittle less than a year, still making fresh payments. It is a 2002 Toyota Camry and I still don't have it Midas does. Today's date you ask? July 15th 2006. I have made many calls to Midas and Midas has made none to me.
Right now I must use my faith in order to keep my religion in tack. I am constantly praying and reading the word. Because I need strength!!! Yes I am Mad AS H-ll

BBB isn't much help in many cases

In my specific experience with Midas (See Heath Ohio ripoff report)..the BBB did little but to get an answer from the franchise owner who said that he stood behind his mechanic. So the BBB told me that's all they can do. So I went to my state's Attorney General's Office.
Although the franchise owner (who owns about 100 of these shops) still admits no wrongdoing, he all too happily refunded my money.
So there's my .02. The BBB can only do so much, unless you really keep hounding them.

If it goes to court that statement may hurt your final judgement, but they still owe you an engine.

Everyone knows there's two sides to every story. That's shown by you posting your side of this one. Your placing a rebuttal shows responsiveness, and lends credence to your company's concern for its customers, and makes it public for all to see. But there's so many other firms who will never tell their side of the story...makes you wonder why.
For you to say that this website and others like it are a ripoff isn't helping your side, though. Have you personally never been "ripped off" by a big company? This website provides an avenue for consumers to voice problems with NON RESPONSIVE companies in hopes of making them RESPONSIVE!
Anyone with common sense can read the posts made here and weed out the ones that are obvious whining/crying/lying. But there are a great number of legitimate problems posted that reflect companies' blowing off customer concerns. I think most of us have been the victims of that. Some of us just won't lie down and take it, though.
I've been ripped off and made the matter public here only after many attempts in getting the company to make the matter right. When I posted my problem on this website, I found that there were others with the exact same problem with the same company. If I had known of this website before dealing with the company, I could have avoided the ripoff. Now I always check this website before dealing with a large company.
Sure, every company will have dissatisfied customers no matter how hard they try, but if a company has a large number of complaints, there must be something to it! Don't knock this website, it's doing a great public service!
As for the BBB, what a joke. They were just as non-responsive to me as the company that ripped me off! In my situation, I wrote the company four times in six months, when that didn't work, I contacted the BBB. No response whatsoever. So I had to take my losses, but now I try to spread the word to help others.

I'd just like to recap on the previous rebuttal. When the customer called to complain and we told the customer we would take care of everything, just bring the car to us. The car was DRIVEN to our shop by the CUSTOMER. The car is DRIVABLE and it is not costing no $14,000 to fix. The car is in the process of being fixed. I feel websites like these are a ripoff. There are two sides to every story. RipOffReport, did not once contact Midas to find out whether or not any of these accusations were true. If a consumer needs to complain about a company the best way to do it is through the Better Buisness Buereau. That way the situation is INVESTIGATED. Websites like these just allow a person to lie and say what ever they want. Consumers, it you have a complaint the best place to handle it is at www.bbb.com.

Verbal assurances need follow-up for this amount of $$

Maybe a lawyer is a good idea- maybe not. You need a lawyer to 'chime in' here. Maybe Timothy?
I am getting the impression that these numerous car dealers who quote $14,000 for a new engine must also be defense contractors selling toilet seats to the Pentagon.
I change the oil in our car, truck, mowers, and boat myself.. I double-check everything I do, and if something gets screwed up I know exactly whom to scream at.
Oil changes are really pretty easy to do yourself, and it is (usually) rather hard to screw up the oil filter installation- unless you do not tighten it properly!. And the filter manufacturer even tells you exactly how much to tighten the filter! Usually engine oil loss is a result of not reinstalling the pan plug (!) or not sufficiently tightening the pan plug (it falls out), or the pan plug is over-tightened and stripped (it can then fall out or leak).

$14,000 for a new motor? Surely that's a typo!? A motor change should be more in the neighborhood of $4000-$5000. Your car's current value is in the range of $14,000 according to Kelly Blue Book. If the mechanic really said it would take that much money to change the engine, you need to stay away from him!
At any rate, because of the amount of money involved, you need to talk to a lawyer about getting Midas to make the situation right. Most of them will give you an initial consultation for free.
Good luck!

Find an engine yourself
AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Thursday, July 27, 2006
Call the salvage yards and have them find you one. The 4 cylinder engines run less than $2000 with low mileage up there, and the 6 cylinder ones for less than $3000.
You can buy a brand new engine from Toyota and have it installed for for less than 1/2 that $14K price.
Find out who the insurance company is that Midas uses. Get in touch directly with them. File a lawsuit if you have to.
Good luck.

It was more then the oil change that caused these problems
AUTHOR: Lynette - (U.S.A.)

I am responding to the complaint on the Toyota Camry. First off the Managers last name is not Fletcher. Second, yes the oil filter was loose, oil leaked out. Customer came right back and we redid oil change. A couple days later we get a call from customer at dealer with car. We spoke with the people at the dealer and was told it was more then just the oil change that caused the car to stop running, there were other issues, but by the oil leaking out it could have contributed to this problem. For them to say they never got response from owner, they are wrong. We currently have their car at a shop being fixed. Mr.Murray was kind enough to go ahead and accept responsiblility for the situation and is correcting it. I understand people get frustrated, its understandable. But if you are going to complain about something you need to tell the whole story!
