MCM send me a letter entitled 'Settlement Opportunity'. This debt collections company claims I owe them $1514.71 for a CITIBANK USA debt. I don't owe this debt.

The only time in my life I have ever had credit problems was right out of college. That was 24 years ago. Since then, I have perfect credit and always pay all my bills on time.

I double-checked my 3 credit reports (free at annualcreditreport, by the way) to make sure there are no errors. There ARE no errors - my credit reports are all flawless. I saw that Midland Credit Managment did a credit inquiry on TransUnion - they saw I didn't owe this debt and apparently decided to try to collect anyway!

I will write to them to tell them I don't owe this money.

Don't bother with writing a long letter....simply request a "debt validation" per your rights under the Fair Debt Collection Act.

Send this letter via Registered Mail with Return Receipt...enclose a photocopy of what they sent you with a simple note stating:

I do not recognize this debt and I am requesting validation per the Fair Debt Collection Act. They must validate the debt per federal law.

Also, you might want to check your credit reports again in a month or so...this firm is notorious for causing damage to credit files.
