Mormons, Mesa Police, Mayhem (Part 1 of 4)

Meet Mr. Larry Craft.
Mr. Craft is one of those Bible thumping street preachers. You know, hellfire and brimstone. He's an itinerant evangelist, who goes around the country preaching the Bible to all the unsaved. (Not just Mormons.) You may not like his message, but he loves you enough to warn you, and it's the stuff of our history (Revivals, Tent Meetings) and what's made our country great.

Yeah, okay, he's brash. Maybe you'd like a law preventing him from saying what he wants to say like a law to stop JW's from coming to your door? (Maybe a law to stop Mormon missionaries from coming to your door too?) But those of you who can think past a minute into the future will realize that if we limit his free
speech rights, then what's to stop us from limiting yours?

Because he's exercising his First Amendment right, he's helping preserve yours. Remember the ditty that used to regularly appear in Dear Abby? Then they came for me, and by that time, there was no one left to speak up for me.

But on this night, Mr. Craft wasn't preaching. On Saturday, March 23, 2002, Mr. Craft came for the first time to Mesa, AZ, home of a large Mormon population and a Mormon Temple. He came to scope out the Mormon Easter Pageant.

As it was Spanish Night, and as Mr. Craft doesn't speak Spanish, all he did was stand on the sidewalk holding a banner with Bible verses on it and watch.

When the crowd let out for the night, Mr. Craft stepped off the sidewalk so as to not obstruct the crowd. He stepped onto the grass toward Mormon property.

The Mesa Police (mostly off-duty, acting as private security for The Church) where thick as thieves, and immediately pounced on him (not literally) telling him
he was trespassing, and had to get off the grass. (Mr. Craft was one foot (literally) off the sidewalk, standing between two public works boxes.)

This has never been a problem in the past 10 years, and seems like common sense, and has even been condoned in the past by Mesa Police. Not this year.

According to Police statements, He [Mr. Craig Shumway, Head of Security for the Arizona Temple] told me [Sgt Njaa of the Mesa P.D.] that the LDS Church decided this year to prosecute for any violations of the law. But the law in Mesa, run by Mormons, is different than the law in the rest of the country.

The Church, specifically, a Mr. Merlin Rowley, told Police that Mr. Craft was causing a disturbance and trespassing, and wanted him arrested. Forgetting Mr. Rowley's lie that Mr. Craft was causing a disturbance (Mr. Craft wasn't preaching because it was Spanish night. Mr. Rowley is a top Mormon official do you want to be like him?

..one would think that a property owner would know where his own property begins and ends especially if he is going to press charges for trespass. But as we shall see, it ain't necessarily so.

Mr. Craft, who used to be a grounds keeper, knew public property had to extend from the centerline of the street beyond the sidewalk, and in fact, pointed out to the Police that a line of planted trees clearly marked the property line of The Church. And Mr. Craft wasn't beyond that line. Well, you know the Mor . . errr, Mesa Police weren't interested in what Mr. Craft had to say. You know, "don't confuse us with facts." (Why didn't they pray about it to find the truth? (A little Mormon humor.))

In addition to being convinced he was NOT on Church property but on public property, Mr. Craft also thought he was being singled out that is, was being discriminated against by the Mormon Church, because of his religion. Considering that there were
thousands of people there that night trespassing on Church property (the Pageant is an open air, no invitation necessary, public event), Mr. Craft figured the ONLY reason he was the ONLY person being arrested for trespass is because he was holding a sign with Bible verses on it. (Why does the Mormon Church fear the Bible?) Remember, he hadn't preached that night against
Mormons or done anything to make a stink. If his sign said I love the Book of Mormon none of this would have happened.

So the Police arrested him. Some people followed him to the jail to bail him out after he was processed which the receptionist said usually takes an hour.

They waited 2 1/2 hours. Wanna guess when Mr. Craft was finally processed? It wasn't until AFTER they left, which was past midnight. (Mr. Craft later told them that 4 prisoners who had come in AFTER him had been processed BEFORE him.) The fix was in. Obviously the Mor . . . er, Mesa Police had it in for Mr. Craft. (I'm surprised they didn't beat him with a rubber hose.)

It turns out that on Monday the Mesa P.D. decided to research where the property line was. (Oops a little late guys.) Here's an excerpt from the Police report

So Mr. Craft was right after all! He was on public property - not church property.

The Mormon Church was wrong and owes Mr. Craft a BIG
apology, plus compensation for his false arrest, don't you think?

To date, no one from The Church or the Police has apologized to him. Guess they're not repentant. Not very Christian, if you ask me.

Mr. Craft was falsely arrested by the Mormon Church and the Mesa Police, and discriminated against by both simply because his religion was different than theirs. Funny, I thought this was the United States, no some Islamic nation where they kill you if you dissent.

And what of Mr. Rowley, who filed the false report with the Police? Arizona law makes filing a false or fraudulent report a misdemeanor. ARS 13-2907.01 Has Mr. Rowley been arrested for making a false report that Mr. Craft was trespassing? To the best of my knowledge No. My guess is he never will be. After all, he's a big wig Mormon.

mormons are people too

AUTHOR: Tina - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, April 18, 2006

All I have to say is that people should not judge the LDS church based on the people. Mormons are people too and there are ones that follow Jesus Christ and then there are ones that are corrupted. You should not judge and critize the mormons everyone will pay for their sins including the mormons. It's a shame of what happened to Mr. Craft and I apologize, regardless of what religion you are I love seeing street preachers, anyone that passes on the word of god. I honestly think the public feels really threatened by the mormons for the fact that they are very organized and alot of people are joining the church for the fact that they are family oriented and you truly are happy when you have Jesus in your heart and lives. All this bickering back and forth about the mormons and how their taking over the world blah blah blah is just the work of the devil. Just remember Jesus loves you no matter what religion you are

mormon church above the law????

AUTHOR: Lori - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, August 25, 2005

This is just another fine example of the Moron oops I mean Mormon church thinking they are above the law. Have they never heard of easement. Where do they get off having someone arrested, falsley, just because he has a different religious view from theirs? Haven't they been whining about mormon persicution for years? It's the same thing!!! Mormons think they are the only ones going to heaven no matter what they do to other people. As long as they go to church on sunday and get their special blessings then no matter what they do the rest of the week is fine. I personally would love to be at the pearly gates when these people arrive and have to attone for their sins. The look on their faces would be priceless when they find out they are going to hell.

If you don't mind...

AUTHOR: David - (U.S.A.)

Emily,
Larry is my brother. Actually, he's my brother-in-law, but he's been alot more than your typical "come-on-over-and-watch-some-football" kind of brother-in-law.

We've spent alot of time together, in alot of differing circumstances. When we first met, we used to drink together. Later, after we both became Christians, we worshipped together. Our kids are close enough to be brothers and sisters.

The weird thing is that we are totally different. When others in this post that know him describe him as "simple", they describe him well. He is by no means a simpleton, just very practical and down-to-earth. He'd be the first person to tell you so. Philosophizing and theorizing have been supplanted by a tireless work ethic and sincere desire to help wherever he can.

I talked to him this week on the phone. He's doing what he always does. Working too hard, sleeping too little. Rebuilding someone's car, working on someone's house, going into the streets at night to preach. He took me out with him once to hand out tracts. I have never felt more self-conscious in my whole life. I knew how people felt about me when they looked at me. You know, I never went back out with him.

Why am I saying this? Well, I guess to try to politely disagree with you on one point. He loves you. He loves you alot more than I do. I learned early on to "shut up and sit down". I learned to keep my opinions to myself so as not to offend those who have differing beliefs than me. Oh, I know that it doesn't seem like he loves you, him with his bullhorn and hard words, but I wish you only knew how much he does.

He's no monster. He's not trying to make a show, or to get publicity. He doesn't hate you or your children. He is only trying to reach out the only way that he knows how with a message that he believes with all of his heart is the truth. And he is trying to live more consistent to that truth than many of us would ever dare to do.

Someone will probably hurt him bad one day. I've heard some of your voices as I've read this post. It may be a Mormon in righteous anger, a crowd at a PRIDE parade, or a bunch of drunks that are looking for a good time. I pray that it never does, but if it does there will be many who will have lost the best friend that they never knew that they had.

Forgive me if I've gotten a bit sappy. I know the debate is pretty heated, and some hard words have gone back and forth. I just wanted to clear up that one point.

This can get very ugly, and is only a symptom.

AUTHOR: J.L. - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, April 22, 2003

Religious wars are futile. I would no more hang out in front of the Mormon Temple trying to make converts than bring a B'nai B'rith conference to n**i Party headquarters to be persuasive. In addition, this is DANGEROUS. However, even if it is INSANE, it is also LEGAL... Mesa's problems run deeper than religion, and "The Mormons" may have begun most of them--after all, they started this town, originally--but this is no longer just about religion, and it is no longer just Mormons we have to blame. Besides, I know a great many LDS church members who are atleast as concerned about Mesa's criminal, drug, and corruption problems as I am. This ridiculous "ART CENTER" and the generally stupid attempts to "revive" and "redevelop" areas, especially in a community already paying very high taxes and WAY too deep in debt, are open sores of corruption that need to be PUNISHED. Much of it is done in an attempt to "beautify" the area around the Temple, which has become incredibly ugly in the time I have lived here. Worse, the drug traffic in the area operates totally unmolested, to the point where it seems to be basically legal, even--hell, ESPECIALLY--right across the street at Pioneer Park. The local "authorities" hire more of the same useless cops, at $40,000 a whack to start, pay out ridiculous amounts of "stability pay" to the most corrupt officials and police, and generally contribute to the overall rot. Stupid and corrupt people need to find other, less harmful lines of work, away from the public's pocketbook. Trouble is, in Mesa, most of them are unqualified and constitutionally unsuited to doing anything more pressure-filled than picking up trash in the streets. Mormon problem? Nope. Problem is, the only people in this town who have any decency are NOT involved in city government, and most of us just don't seem to CARE or VOTE. Blaming it on a religion or a religion's practitioners is an easy cop-out for those who refuse to fight for a more sensible community, one still conservative, but not all awash in the s****.>

Yawn! When I read this I laughed out loud! Ignorance raises its ugly head again! I have a simple question--why didn't the supposedly "righteous" protester GO AND SEE the pageant then make up his mind for himself before he judged the Mormons? Why waste energy trying to stop something that will never be stopped? The Lord's work will roll forth. It will not be stopped. By the way, the Book of Mormon is ANOTHER Testament of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ...that means TWO...the Bible being the other Testament. As far as being "arrested" for trespassing because the security guards did not know the exact property lines---hum...I keep MY property survey in my glove box for just these special occasions...oh well people make mistakes--we are human...and sometimes people get their just desserts.

I believe the LDS church is made up of good people that believe in charity, honesty, and purity. It's a shame that some people would rather waste their time fighting an issue because they don't believe in the book, than exercise being kind to others- what the bible teaches! It doesn't matter if I am a member of the church -I know right from wrong....

Mesa Police, Mormon Church win this round

AUTHOR: M - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, March 22, 2003

First, this is Part 1 of a 4 part series.

Part 2 is here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/view.asp?id=26994
Part 3 is here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/view.asp?id=27006
Part 4 is here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/view.asp?id=27020

------------

Next, you can see a rebuttal to Emily's rant in Part 4, http://www.ripoffreport.com/view.asp?id=27020

------------

Now, the end of this story.

Unfortunately, since he's not a lawyer, Mr. Craft didn't know that Arizona has a 180-day deadline for filing a lawsuit against the police. (And none of Mr. Craft's lawyers mentioned this to him, if they knew.) This would have been such an easy case to win, since even the cops said in their own police report that they were wrong; that Mr. Craft was in fact on public property when they arrested him for trespass, put him in jail, and prevented his friends from bailing him out. (Easy in quotes because Mesa is notoriously pigheaded about repenting from wrongs. There was a case recently settled there where, because a cop spelled a name wrong, a man was falsely accused of being a felon. You'd think Mesa would admit the cop made a mistake, but No. This man had to sue. Thankfully, he won his suit, but all the citizens of Mesa lost. (And the man's life was still messed up for a year or two.)

So the Mesa cops won this round. And there seems to be a one-year limit for suing the Mormon Church for instigating the false arrest, so they won this round too.

May they both receive their reward in full.

When they come for you? They come for us!

AUTHOR: Emily - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, March 17, 2003

This Sunday I am going to stand in front of your church and tell your children that your beliefs are garbage and that you lie to them.

I am going to tell them all sorts of sick things like that you have multiple wives, entire other families, because maybe your ancestors come from a country that practices that, even though you don't.

I am going to tell them that your religion is a cult. I am going to tell them lots of fun rumors, like that you hate minorities and cook and eat their babies. I am going to tell them that you worship a graven image, how about the cross, the instrument of Christ's death because you hate Jesus. Then I will tell them that you don't even believe in Jesus, you just say you do. Them I am going to tell them that they are going to burn forever in hell. Because they don't belong to the church I think they should.

Do you like that? Neither do we. We go to the temple to worship. We don't like hate mongers screaming these things at our children.

Where does your right to bad mouth us to anyone, and our right to raise our children by our faith begin?

We don't go to your churchs and worship places and do these things? Why do you do them to us?

I wanted to punch out protesters at a circus I took my children to because they were following me down the sidewalk telling my young children that I hate the earth and animals because I was taking them to a circus... for the first time in their young lives. I was mad enough to do it too.

They are my children... I will raise them in my beliefs... as you raise your children in yours. I fully believe you can defend your family in whatever means you deem necessary. I am sorry my Brother in the church attacked the man protesting. But I do not blame him... did not Christ himself turn the moneychangers out of his temple?

So make up your lies, your false stories. You bigotted followers of Satan. Persecute us for our beliefs and approve of those who do it for you. You are bigots... for your hate. Jesus never taught hate... shows how loving you all are.

Forget about free speech. Forget about freedom of religion. Forget about fairness. You are in Mesa. There are no laws, no constitution here...

POSTED: Sunday, October 06, 2002

This is Mesa.

The press in Arizona does not use its
broad freedoms to expose ANYTHING that might
be "negative", until it gets so huge no one
can ignore it.

Thus, Charlie Keating, the Baptist Fund, your
friendly, local city manager's office, Mesa
P.D., Sheriff Joe, and a whole litany of other
thieves operate right out in the open, unencumbered by truth or exposure or any kind
of civilian review that matters. And if they
steal a billion or two here and there, well,
that's just "politics"...

And if they wrap themselves in religious cloth
of some sort and thump a bible--Mormon, Baptist,
whatever--well, then they have "special rights"...

A dirtball is a dirtball. A weasel is a weasel.
A thief is a thief. Lies are lies.

Here's some TRUTH: In Mesa, the U.S. Constitution means NOTHING. You have no
religious rights, no free speech, your
property can be confiscated capriciously,
you WILL be arrested for nothing and hassled
mercilessly, and if you aren't, well, then
you must have lots of money or good connections
with the LDS church. Or both.

None of this will ever change until information
about the real forces driving this little
empire reaches the majority of the public.

People NEED to read the newspapers, even if they contain very little truth. YOU DO NOT GET REAL
NEWS OFF THE INTERNET, you get little morsels.
People need to ask questions of city and county
government, and be just cynical and salty enough
to ask for real information. People need to read the NEW TIMES, which is mostly junk, but again, contains some wonderful tidbits from time to time.

And this website needs to be popularized. Same with the MesaAZCorruptionReport.com I do
public contact work, and I hear conversations
about local politics that are so WRONG, based
on weird misinformation and disinformation, that I just shudder to think how STUPID people are.
They are being tossed into a fleecing machine, their money is being stolen, their children are exposed to drugs and perverts and WORSE, and they cannot even figure out that the way this town is run contributes heavily to all the rot.

I dislike the Jehovah's Witness religion. I am not especially fond of any of the charismatic
or Pentecostal or Evangelical bible thumpers. But I do not roughhouse them or insult or suppress them. The Mormon religion is, itself, a rather attractive one to me, but I see what it has done to this town, and it just MAKES ME SICK. It isn't really the religion.

It's the local politicians who have made it into a money and power based private club, and who have manipulated this town and its already corrupt police department into a national joke that really hurts.

I used to make my living dealing mainly with "s****.> quit coming back. They were stopped capriciously just because they had out-of-state licenses or
were driving in an area near a bar. Several were members of a local shooting range, and the cops basically stole their perfectly legitimate guns from their cars when they were going home or headed to Rio Salado. A couple with bad legs and several with other infirmities were actually JAILED for either refusing to take field sobriety tests (in which they could have seriously injured themselves) or for "failing" when they tried, none of them even drinkers. This kind of filthy, dishonest, STUPID fishing expedition killed my
company.

A sweet old Jewish lady was sipping a drink on the front porch of her mobile home when some Mormon Missionaries came by. One of them became extremely aggressive, and she apparently swore at him (ON HER PROPERTY, LET ME ADD), apologized, and asked the twits to move on.

Six cop cars came, there was a huge brannigan,
and her husband had a heart attack. He died a
few weeks later.

Like the others, she won't be back. And she
hates this place.

Religious intolerance? That's only a little,
itty-bitty part of the rot.

Is this an initiation process or what? Let's face it: This police department is more criminal than the mafia, by far, and likewise more corrupt.

The only way to deal with SCUM is to boycott their businesses, let them know why, encourage s****.> These rats are a tiny minority, and yet they hold virtually absolute power, in this little madhouse whorehouse that is Mesa.

The only way to put them where they belong is to do the obvious, and the only solution for the majority of the citizens is transparent.

There will be no justice anywhere in this community until these scum are properly chastized.
