MXenergy Hidden Cancellation Fees Stamford, Connecticut

A representative of MXenegry knocked on my door in the fall of 2008.  He asked to see my South Jersey Gas bill and went on to tell me how I could save tremendously if I would allow MXenergy to supply my gas. He further explained that using South Jersey Gas pipes.  

When the winter of 2011 came along, I noticed my gas bill was about 3-4x higher than it was in the past.  I sat down and took a closer look at my bill.  My search revealed that on several occasions, I had been charged a $100 sometimes $200, more than what South Jersey Gas would have charged me.

My next step was to contact MXenergy to request that my services with them be terminated.  The customer service rep explained to me how I could give her my credit card or debit card number that day and make a subscription payment.  I would be entered into a plan where I received my gas for a fraction of what I was paying.   

After I refused the offers, the customer service rep explained to me that I by my initial acceptance of their service, I agreed to a 3 year contract and if I terminated at that time, I would be charged $250. Well, at the rate they were charging me, I would have spent 3x that amount if I continued to use their services until fall of 2011 when this said "contract" ran out.

Two months later, MXenergy was no longer showing up on my bill and I was back to South Jersey Gas alone. However, the charges including the termination fee for MXenergy remains on my bill. I am now scheduled for termination.  I receive assistance with my payments in years past because of my financial situation and have never had a problem with being terminated.  Now that my bill includes this charge, my monthly balance seems extensive and I most likely will have my services disconnected.
