I clicked on a banner ad for http://formula-4-a-healthy-u.org/ and 'won' a free consultation with a weight loss coach but I had to fill in a form which some very in-dept questions about my health and habits in the form, which I answered as well as saying why I deserved this free consultation. I then received an email saying a coach would ring me at a specific time on a specific day.

The coach, Helen Smith, did ring me when she said she would. We went over my history - years of anti-depressants to combat chronic depression, weight gain, hypoglycaemia and inability to motivate myself I usually follow a high protein, low carb/low fat diet and have 4-6 small meals a day, 1-2 of which are usually protein shakes. I was struggling with the motivation demon again, which is why I answered the banner ad in the first place.

Helen was a very nice person but knew absolutely nothing about supplements other than the ones she sells. She also wasn't aware of commonly used protein powders, such as Musashi or EAS, nor did she understand the use of l-carnitine for fat loss or l-glutamine to control sugar levels or any of the supplementation commonly used in the natural treatment of depression and hypoglycaemia. In fact, Helen knew absolutely nothing about anything other than her own products.

She assured me that her 'diet' was a high protein low fat/low carb style of eating (also known in Australia as the Magazine Editor's Diet). This was a bald-faced lie. Her products are actually shake type meal replacements from Herbalife and are actually a Very Low Calorie Diet - an absolute disaster for someone like me with my medical problems.

I told her there was absolutely no way I could drink shakes instead of having meals. She insisted that her products were used by diabetics (she did send me a one page word document that said that diabetics must drink half the shake every 2-3 hours instead of a whole shake every 4-5 hours).

After half an hour of conversation she also said her products were Herbalife. I told her I did not like the company and if she tried to recruit me I would hang up on her. She assured me she would not do so and suggested I try the products and see how I go. I told her that I would use them as small meals, like I use other protein shakes and she said they'd be perfect.

The shakes arrived in good time, Helen did follow up well on the phone. Unfortunately 3 days of using the shakes resulted in me having terrible headaches from not eating enough (hypoglycaemia caused by the very low calorie diet) and after 2 weeks I put weight on. Not really the desired result. I wrote to Helen asking for a refund, I returned the shakes (I kept the soy protein powder because that product is good, although overpriced) and she refunded the credit card promptly.

I have no problem with the level of Helen Smith's service. The issue I have is that she is ignorant and should not be advising anyone on their health and weight loss matters without a lot more education herself. She lied about the type of diet that she offers, her web site does not state anywhere that she sells Herbalife products, and a small banner on the front page is for a 'work from home' scheme.

What is the real ripoff is that this poor woman is trying to earn a living with absolutely no idea that she is selling below average products and giving what could be potentially dangerous and misleading medical related advice.

I'm lucky. I have had three years of training as a medical herbalist and food therapist and I'm very aware of the body/mind connection with diet and depression and weight loss. Most people do not have this advantage. These uncrupulous bastards are selling these 'turnkey work from home' schemes to untraining, ignorant people like poor Helen Smith who then sell inferior Herbalife products to people desperate to shed weight and get healthy and get their life back.

I have filed this report to let people know that Herbalife is doing yet another version of their unscrupulous multi-level marketing.

Response to Ray

Hello Ray,
thank you for your comment. I have seen you post on other threads, so I hope you are not going to be contentious on this one.

To address your comments:
Regarding my mind being in order - it is. I know I'm happier when I'm not carrying so much weight and I was proactively seeking a solution to my problem. At the time I was looking for a good quality protein powder that could be taken as a drink in between meals as well as to be added to meals. I was looking around for options. The idea of regular coaching was a great one so I clicked the banner and sent off my application. Thats' how Ms Smith got my personal details and we had a telephone conversation.

Regarding bodytonemall.com - I have no knowledge of this business so I cannot comment.
Regarding detoxification: If I'd wanted to do a detox, I would have gone on a juice fast/colon cleansing one, which I have used before and found very effective. The only side effects from that was a caffeine withdrawal headache. There was no warning about detoxification or side-effects thereof.

Ray, you are absolutely right. I do know what to do and what to get but I am also open minded and will also try new products and eating plans. Ms Smith was convinced the herbalife meal replacement program would work for me. I gave it a go and it didn't work for me the way it did for you. Shame really, it would save on all that food preparation!

Hypoglycaemics need regular small meals (like diabetics), and a low GI diet. Meal replacements don't work because the blood sugar is not kept constant. Depressives need a diet that is high protein/low fat/low carb and has no sugar at all. Most often recommended is the South Beach or Magazine Editors diet, in small servings every 3-4 hours.

I was told by Ms Smith that she had a friend like me, with the same problems and that she felt fantastic and it should work for me as well. It didn't, it made things worse! The problem I have with Ms Smith is that she was ignorant of the suitability and sustainability of the herbalife program for someone like me, and was more interested in selling product than my health. I have read about Herbalife on this site, and other consumer sites, and now understand why she said whatever she could to make the sale. It must be very hard for those people, so many of them seem to get ripped off and be unahppy with their choice of business.
That said, Herbalife has helped lots of people lose weight and get healthy. I'm simply not one of them. I do like their protein powder, but it is very overpriced compard to similar products.
I am currently on a healthy eating plan suitable for my needs, walking 20-30 minutes each day and losing about a kilo a week. Im still looking for a good protein powder, I've been through a couple of other brands since I tried Herbalife and i'm yet to find one that is tasty in a shake and also comes with no flavour and can be added to food.

Any recommendations Ray?

If you had 3yrs. of training as a medical herbalist and the problems you said you had, seem to me you would have gotten your mind in order before you started any kind of program. I had a couple from bodytonemall.com that told me pretty much the same things Helen told you. The program they put together for me worked and I have never felt this good in a long time.

In the process of detoxifying, you may not feel to well at the beginning, but when you keep taking the products, everything will even out after some time. Since you are a trained Medical Herbalist you should have known what products you needed to get from
