Here's how they got me:

I signed up for a free credit report at ClearCredit.com in 2003.

First mistake: The above signup also triggered a hard inquiry on my credit report from a Clear Credit affiliated Real Estate company who ultimately sent me a mortgage offer that I didn't ask for.

Second mistake: I went to ClearCredit.com in 2/2005 just to see if they ever updated my free credit report and found I had reached MyPerfectCredit.com. The buyout of Clear Credit was explained and I was encouraged to "login" using my former User ID and password... no charges were mentioned up to this point. As a matter of fact, the word FREE is all over their new website!

Third mistake: Upon logging in, I encountered a notice asking me to accept the conditions and terms of the new provider's contract by pressing an "I agree" button. I DID NOT press the button and logged out immediately.

Fourth mistake: A few days later, I received an email welcoming me to MyPerfectCredit.com. Unfortunately, I did not read the entire email because it did state (near the end) they were going to start charging me $9.95 monthly for their services and I only had 5 days to cancel before the charges would start.

Yes, I finally found out about the charges by reviewing my credit card statement... so now I'm really ticked!! What to do??

I located their phone number (877-469-7373) and followed the prompts to "cancel an account." The person that answered is really an answering service screener. She did ask if I wanted a refund and I said yes; however, I'm not holding my breath. She also said she would forward my request to the MyPerfectCredit billing department and I would hear from them soon. (I'll update this if or when I do)

As an added precaution to ensure the account gets cancelled, I am downloading a cancellation form I obtained from their website (yes, I had to login to get it). Their instructions for completing this form are terrible and they give you two options for delivery to the company:

1st option: Complete the required form fields, sign and date it (required), and fax it to 425-977-8729

2nd option: cut and paste the form into an email, complete it, and send it to closemyaccount@myperfectcredit.com. (how are you going to add your required signature to an email?)

Anyway, I chose the 1st option and faxed it off today as a backup to my call (I'll update this post when I successfully get my account cancelled and tell you which method worked)

One more thing, I contemplated reporting this as fraudulent charges to my credit card company; however, I did read their entire "terms" document (click terms at the bottom of their main page) and this company appears to have tailored it to protecting them when they feel they are in a legal position to "start charging" uninformed consumers like myself (yeah, I should have read the first email fully). Please be careful if you try to go thr fraud route with this company.

Sorry to be so long-winded; however, it was an honest attempt to give you all the big picture of how this company operates.

So for me, Ill just eat the $9.95 and work very hard to get this account cancelled before their next billing cycle. (Note: I am retired and I just don't have the energy to fight these guys)

More to follow...

2nd Response to Desirae your situation clearly constitutes "identity theft

AUTHOR: Gus - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, April 08, 2005

Desirae,

Yes, I was a previous customer of ClearCredit.com; however, if you NEVER signed up (online) for a free credit report (or anything else free), then your situation clearly constitutes "identity theft" and should be reported and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law!

With that said, I opted to fight this company without changing and/or cancelling any of my bank or credit card accounts. One reason for this decision is that I have credit monitoring and identity theft insurance. If you are interested, you can purchase this insurance from any one of the three major credit bureaus. I chose Trans Union because they were the cheapest and offered the highest insurance limits. Here's what you get for $10.95 per quarter:

1 - Weekly updates on your credit status (i.e., no change, etc.)
2 - $25,000.00 fraud insurance

With that coverage, I feel confident that I can react to any issue before it causes irreputable harm.

Look into it and best of luck!

response to gus The member authorizes's MyPerfectCredit's official payment processing agent to collect payment by automatic credit card

AUTHOR: Desirae - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, April 08, 2005

gus I think you were able to cancel your account that way because your account was started through a previous membership with clearcredit. I only asked because when I fill out there cancelation form they send me a email back telling me that they are unable to locate my account with the info I provided, but I copy and plasted my user name a password from there own emails. I also wanted to tell you that I agree with your comment about everyone needs to file their complaint with better bussiness bureau, and with fedural trade commission I have already done this myself. for me it is not about the money infact I didn't let them get any from me. when I realized I could not cancel my account the same day I signed on the web site I started my searching and found this web site which gave me a heads up and I suspended my credit card before my five day trial ended.

I too read the terms and conditons which stated "The member authorizes's MyPerfectCredit's official payment processing agent to collect payment by automatic credit card or debit card for services rendered.

The member agrees not to report any credit card or debit card as lost or stolen that the member has used in conjunction with payment to MyPerfectCredit, or to report any charge by MyPerfectCredit on the member's credit card as unauthorized, for any services, if the member does not have good reason to believe they are, in fact, unauthorized or believe such card is not lost or stolen." but you know what I have so much dated material gathered that proves these charges would be unauthorized. thanks for your help gus.

Forgot to Mention More people need to file complaints with the BBB and FTC.

AUTHOR: Gus - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, April 07, 2005

Yes, I did enter my social as my UserID but only on the fax to their fax number.

I understand this is/was risky but I did it anyway.

Maybe it was foolish to do so; but we'll see.

I have also filed complaints with the BBB online as well as the FTC for both poor business practices as well as possible identity theft.

More people need to file complaints with the BBB and FTC.

Regards,

reported in ERROR, per credit bureau!
- This incorrect data can be used to deny you credit, charge you outrageous interest
rates, prevent employment, and even deny you insurance!
- Removing negative items from your credit reports can significantly improve your
credit scores and enable you to qualify for more credit and lower costs!
- Over 30,000 people are victims of Identity Theft each day causing significant loss
and headache. This can damage your credit reports in many ways and very quickly.
- The U.S. Supreme Court has said that individuals are responsible for their credit
report files, not the credit bureaus. This means YOU must dispute identity theft,
inaccurate, outdated or unverifiable items.

Finally Got My Account Cancelled With a Full Refund

AUTHOR: Gus - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, April 07, 2005

Here's how I did it:

3/27 - Called their 800 number (877-469-7373) and requested an immediate account cancellation with a full refund (they had charged my credit card $9.95 on 2/18 and 3/24). The answering service said they would forward my request to the MyPerfectCredit billing department.

3/27 - Logged onto MyPerfectCredit.com and changed the default password. This was very important in my opinion because they setup your account as follows:

User ID: Your Social Security Number
Password: Last 4 digits of your Social Security Number

With that kind of setup, anybody can enter a random SS# and enter the last 4 digits of the same number and find out who owns it (if they were built in the MyPerfectCredit database... dangerous!

3/27 - Now even more scared, I sent an email also requesting my account be cancelled immediately (The email was sent by selecting "cancellation" on a drop-down menu in the support area). In the body of the email, I simply stated "Please cancel my account immediately" and gave my name and emaill address. I did not include my SS# because I wasn't sure it was a secure connection. They auto-replied and gave a reference number to my request.

3/27 - Still trying to cover every base (in case I had to dispute this with my credit card company), I pulled a copy of their cancellation request, completed it, and faxed it on 3/29 to their fax number. (I did this because I wanted a fax receipt to indicate the transmission was successful)

3/30 - Received an email from MyPerfectCredit that confirmed my account cancellation but it made no reference to my request for a refund. This email included the same reference number in the previous auto-reply.

4/7 - Checked my credit card (via telephone) for additional charges from this company and was amazed to discover that MyPerfectCredit had credited my card with both of the previous $9.95 charges... a full refund.

I'm not sure if a single action worked or if it was a combination of all the above.

Good Luck,
