We Paid $500.00 Barter for a one night stay at Grand Bear Lodge in Utica Illinois. We used the service of www.MyCondoRental.com, a Mr. John Palatine who then charged us another $157.50 for cleaning. Supposedly, the hotel closed the water park on 10-05-11 and the General Manager (Brett) Swears he called John Palatine office to inform him. Of course, they never had the courtesy to call or email us. So on Thursday, 10-05-11 we were driving out when my daughter called to ask about internet service and we were told they were closed. When asked what to do, we were told we were on our own. www.MyCondoRental.com and Grand Bear Lodge have no care or concern for the guests. They're right there with HANDS OUT for Money Up-Front, but the hell with you after we've gotten payment. So far, they've got my $500.00 barter and $157.50 cleaning fee. What a RIP-OFF. It is my PERSONAL feeling that they did not have enough weeknight occupancy and they simply decided not to open the waterpark. Basically, I believe that they lied. AVOID Grand Bear Londge and www.My CondoRental.com from John Palatine. You will be un-happy as me and my grandchildren are. There are numerous water-parks in Wisconsin Dells and Gurnee IL. Learn from my mistake, avoid Grand Bear Lodge and www.MyCondoRental.com, John Palatine so you will not disappoint your grandkids and be out money.

Mr. Kevin Raines in legal trouble

As Mr. Palatine's legal representative, I was asked to review Mr. Raine's comments on this web site.
Mr. Raines comments are all incorrect. He was reimbursed for the night he was going to stay, he was immediately refunded his money for the cleaning fee and taxes and he turned down compensation. Mr. Palatine has gone beyond what is fair to make this matter right, but Mr. Raines has a personal agenda. After contacting the resort, I was told by management that Mr. Raines was called at 9:15am the day he was to arrive. A young voice answered, was told that Mr. Raines was not available but will let him know that the waterpark will be closed. This message must not have gotten to him which is no fault of the resort or the fault of Mr. Palatine. If Mr. Raines has any common sense, he would recognize that Mr. Palatine had no cause, benefit or motive to withhold any information regarding the temporary closing of the water park. Mr. Raines is also in error in thinking that Mr. Palatine is a travel company. He simply owns a cabin at this resort that he rents out. Mr. Palatine has a stellar reputation in the vacation rental industry and this misinformation and lies will not be tolerated.
Mr. Raines is now facing legal issues for defamation of character, slander and cyberlibel.

In his two rebuttals, John Palatine owner of www.MyCondoRental.com is lying and trying to brush off the truth. I have asked John Palatine for the license number from his Illinois Travel Re-Seller's License. He can't deliver this. Does this mean that this man is running an UN-LICENSED travel shop? Well, seen as he hasn't refunded my monies yet, I am going to file a claim with the Illinois Attorney General for an UN-LICENSED travel shop. Beware people, if he is not properly licensed then you have NO protect.

Misinformation.

On October 5, 2010 The State of Illinois closed many area pools, as they do not conform to the new code. Pools must now have a safety update to the filtration system. As the owner's of Grand Bear did not comply, the State shut the park down. That information can be located in The Ottawa Daily Times October 6th or 7th edition. That is where I read about it.
Mr. Palatine would not have been informed by the state of these changes as he doesn't own the water park.
I noticed in your complaint that "you were driving out on October 5th" and "The manager informed you that Mr. Palatine's office was informed on October 5th". I can't help but notice that the park was closed on the 5th, somehow Grand Bear called every interested party(literally 100's of people) on the 5th after the State closed them down, and you were driving out on the 5th. Jumping to the conclusion that he just didn't feel like calling you is a leap. It seems to me that perhaps you hadn't allowed enough time between the resort being informed, miraculously placing all of the 100's of calls they say they made and Mr. Palatine calling you? From your complaint you would think that Mr. Palatine knew this in advance and just decided to take your money...which doesn't seem (even by your account) to be what happened. Just because Grand Bear knew what was going on doesn't mean the private owner's did. Grand Bear knew in advance they were supposed to fix the pool...again the private owner's had nothing to do with the situation.
Utica has "Burgoo fest" this weekend. Every hotel, resort etc. in the area is booked for the entire weekend. Mr. Palatine would have had absolutely no trouble booking the lodge with or without the pool being open, as Burgoo fest doesn't happen in the pool.
Mr. Palatine is a reputable businessman and I have never had any trouble at all dealing with him. He has always been fair and honest. Grand Bear on the other hand has not complied with a state ruling and just finished with a bancruptcy filing. I find your report to be uninformed. I am sorry your Grandson's vacation was "stolen" in your mind. You should have driven out anyhow as there is SOOOOO much more to do at the resort and the State Park that is right across the street. Or perhaps you could have booked a new date when the pool was re-opened.

Grand Bear Lodge Closing
AUTHOR: Brenda01 - (United States of America)

Dear Sir,
I am a person familiar with this situation and Mr. Palatine. He could not possibly have had knowledge of the parks closing. If you read in the Ottawa Daily Times, you will see an article in regard to The State of Illinois closing down the pool, a situation that Mr. Palatine had absolutely no control over. That one is all on Grand Bear Lodge itself. I assure you the State of Illinois did not send Mr. Palatine a notice of intent.
As for Grand Bear notifying Mr. Palatine, they tend to say they do a lot of things but if you look up their reputation on line as opposed to Mr. Palatine's reputation I think you will find Mr. Palatine is a fair business person. Grand Bear....well not so much. They are not in my opinion run in a reputable manner. Just because they say they made Mr. Palatine aware doesn't mean they did. It means they were covering their butts.
This weekend the area children have a 31/2 day weekend...the resort should be very well booked. Mr. Palatine would have absolutely no trouble booking his cabin. I have worked with him for quite a while and find him to be reputable, honest and more than fair. Perhaps you should look further into this entire situation and the reputation of Mr. Palatine and the reputation of the resort owner's themselves, and you will find that you have been misled. It isn't Mr. Palatine who has a poor track record of honesty and integrity.
