I was listening to a talk radio show when a commercial came on about a tax refunds kit that would help you maximize your income tax return. They were offering a free kit to the first forty callers.

I dialed the number one time and I got through. The man on the other end told me that I was caller number thirty-nine and I qualified for the free kit. The only thing I had to pay for was shipping ($6.00); and, the radio station was picking up the cost of the kit. The first thing they asked me for was a phone number of where I would be in the next twenty minutes. I gave them the number. He then took down my name, credit card info (for the shipping) and mailing address. He told me that they would send the kit out but he would be calling me back for more information within twenty minutes. I figured it was just a survey so I agreed.

The same guy called me back and started asking questions about my 2002 tax returns. He asked how much I got back and who prepared them. He told me that there are many tips people don't know about that will get you 15% more of your tax money back. He also stated that the company who prepared my taxes did not bother with the long forms used for all of these deductions because they were paid by the client not the hour and they want to get you in and out quickly.

He asked about my gross income; how much we pay out in utilities; phone bills; how many miles we put on our car per year and how much we pay in mortages, taxes, insurance. I gave him the information and he told me based on this information I could file an amendment to my 2002 taxes and receive at least $5,000 more in tax returns. He also told me that they have financial planners on staff that could help us manage our finances better.

He told me that there was a 30 day money-back guarantee if they didn't completely "blow me away". Also they would refund your money at any time if they don't get you at least $3,000 in additional tax refunds each year.

I assumed because the reputable talk radio station was paying for the kit, they must have checked out the product/service. Plus it had a 30 day money-back guarantee. I signed up for their membership. He offered a four year membership for $1,400. I figured with the additional tax return money I would be receiving, it was a good investment and would pay for itself, in just a few months.

After I hung up the phone, I went on the internet and looked up the company. The second item listed after the company website was a a negative document from the Federal Trade Commission stating that the company did not honor their guarantee to make the clients an additional $3,000 in tax refunds per year. The refunds clients did have coming were not received in a timely fashion; and they did not refund the clients money and misrepresented their policy. There have been 600 complaints to the Nevada Attorney General and the Better Business Bureau gives an unsatisfactory rating.

I immediately contacted them to cancel the memebership. They told me that they would cancel but my credit card had already been charged and the kit had already been sent out (Amazing since I had just gotten off the phone with them 20 minutes prior). She gave me an authorization number to write on the box when I return it. I hung up uneasy about the conversation.

I called my credit card company to inform them of the situation. They verified that there was a $1,400 authorization on the card but it had not actually been "charged" yet. He said that it couldn't actually be disputed until they "charged" the card.

I called the National Audit Defence Network back and told them that I wanted them to cancel the authorization. The guy told me that they would not do that until they received their merchandise back. I asked what the "free" kit had to do with the $1,400 membership that I cancelled. I added that the radio station payed for the kit and I was entitled to it regardless. He told me that the "free" kit was null and void when I signed up for the membership. He said I was trying to get something for nothing. I told him that I didn't even want the kit I just wanted the credit card authorization reversed. He said he couldn't take my word that I would return the kit and the information contained in the kit was very valuable.

I explained why I had cancelled and what I was experiencing was reflective of the information I had read on the Better Business Bureau website and elsewhere on the internet. He basically laughed at me; told me that I was stupid with my money and I shouldn't be so impatient to have the charge reversed.

These unprofessional tactics made me even more skeptical about ever getting my money back. From what I've read, they will send the kit anyway (I know it wasn't shipped 20 minutes after I signed up) which will take forever to get to my house. My credit card will get charged in the meantime and when I send it back, they will give me problems about refunding my money.
