I opened an starter acct for my teenage daughter which was to be linked to my acct in the event an overdraft occurred. Needless to say the accts were not linked and she was slammed with $347 in bank fees for a $8.32 Mcdonalds debit.

The bank even charged her $15 to transfer $0.03 from her savings acct twice. The second time there was nothing in the savings acct but $0.03 was deposited, as so called interest, to charge another $15.

I spoke with the bank manager, Frank, and he advised me he would not take off the fees . I have spoken with customer service for both National City and PNC with no results.

The acct has now been sent to collection and her credit ruined even before she could get any established.

Daughter's error is irrelevant

AUTHOR: Curben - (USA)

POSTED: Wednesday, April 06, 2011

whether it was a mistake, foolishness, an accounting error or what not is irrelevant.

If they said they would link the accounts, claim they have and failed to do so, The institution is negligent and should have taken responsibility for their failure to do so.

It's one thing to learn from your mistake and another entirely to be ravaged financially above and beyond when precautions were taken and the company failed to comply.

It is also riduculous to condemn her for not giving her money to the bank, they bank doesnt deserve to be rewarded for their negligence, and despite the higher balance we do not know why the balance was there, mortgages, major repairs, etc and it is not our business why and is not relevant to the point of the post.

What the?

"I opened an starter acct for my teenage daughter which was to be linked to my acct in the event an overdraft occurred. Needless to say the accts were not linked and she was slammed with $347 in bank fees for a $8.32 Mcdonalds debit. "

This is very unlikely.  ONE OD doesn't lead to $347 in fees UNLESS you let it stay in the red for a long period of time.  Almost all banks will assess a daily fee to the account until a deposit is made that makes the account positive.

"The bank even charged her $15 to transfer $0.03 from her savings acct twice. The second time there was nothing in the savings acct but $0.03 was deposited, as so called interest, to charge another $15.  "

So she transfered 13 CENTS from her savings account twice at a cost of $15 each time?  What nonsense is this?  Didn't you or your daughter READ the term and conditions for the accounts?

It seems to me that you, with your college degree, FAILED to adequately train your daughter in the proper maintenance of a checking account.

"The acct has now been sent to collection and her credit ruined even before she could get any established. "

Indeed it has!  If it were my daughter, I'd have paid the fees to PREVENT my daughter's credit rating from being trashed-can work to straighten out the cause LATER.

"My daughter was keeping a check register and the blame I place on the bank is they did not link the two accts."

One has to maintain an ACCURATE and RECONSILED bank register.  It's not enough to simply record deposits and checks/bank card use.  One has to record ALL transactions, including any service charges assessed by the bank; auto-withdrawals, non-bank ATM fees, etc.

"The bank was more than ready to link the accts after a bunch of fees had racked up and they wanted to get at the large balance in my checking acct and FYI I don't do the woe is me type sh_ _t I take responsibility for my mistakes and have taught my children the same."

You have enough money and yet you let your daughter's credit rating go to crap over this?  Thanks Mom!  I would have paid the fees and then sat down with my daughter and reconsiled her check register with the monthly statement from the bank to see where she MADE AN ERROR(s).

"I AM GAINFULLY EMPLOYED WITH A COLLEGE DEGREE" so you see everyone with bank issues don't all share the same background. "

It's not an issue of "background," it's an issue of an account holder performing due deligence.  There are many folks who never OD their accounts who do not have a college degree.  Also, there are many folks without college degrees who manage to use correct subject-verb agreement when writing (grammar.)

The first thing any account holder needs to know is WHAT FEES will be assessed under what conditions.

Then the account holder needs to maintain an accurate and reconsiled account register so as to NOT OVERDRAW the checking account.

I'm really rather shocked that you allowed your daughter's credit rating to be shot over this.  BTW, if she is a minor then your name is attached to the account and your credit rating may take a hit from this as well.

Real smart of you Mom (college degree and all.)

The problem is everybody is trying to screw somebody. The economy is blown to sh_ _ t,  business is bad everywhere, and the way alot of these businesses is trying to stay afloat is by shafting the little guy but I'm sorry I am not the one. National City should have Kissed me before they tried to F@@@K me and the last time I checked I don't kiss on the first date............... AND NO I AM NOT ON WELFARE, NOR ON DRUGS,  I AM GAINFULLY EMPLOYED WITH A COLLEGE DEGREE so you see everyone with bank issues don't all share the same background.

Learn

To teach your child how to manage her bank account ie: keep a check register, reconcile her monthly statement and stop using the debit card like a credit card

And NO I do not work for the bank or any bank for that matters. I have learned how to manage my money through trial and error. Stop blaming the bank for her errors!
