ATM deposit on a Saturday.  Check written and cashed on following Tuesday (Monday was a holiday).

National City Bank held my deposit (which was a local check from a money market fund) until  after they debited my account for scheduled bill pays and the above mentioned check. Debits and credit to my account happened on the same day.

They charged me 9 - $30 overdraft charges in 1 day because I had some scheduled online bill pays come through on that Tuesday and a few transactions as well.

I called them and told them to credit my account for the overdraft charges stating I had been a good customer for over 10 years and I had overdraft protection and the check was deposited 3 days before the charges were made.

They said I did not have overdraft protection although they admitted that I had applied for it years earlier and they just didn't know why it had not been set up.

They refused to credit my account.  I told them I would take my money elsewhere and they actually said - "You'll find all banks are the same"  I said - I wonder what your CEO would say if he heard you tell a customer that your bank is no better than any other".

I am now in the process of moving all of my money to a local bank.

5th/3rd no better

AUTHOR: JensDad12 - (USA)

POSTED: Thursday, October 08, 2009

We opened an overdraft protection with 5th/3rd with their credit card...they not only didn't protect the account when we overdrafted once...they closed the credit card (we've been customer's with them for 16 years).

They follow the herd when it comes to the "highest debit first, lowest last" so they can try to NSF you...irregardless of when the transactions should have been posted.

Unfortunately, what the National City employee told you is correct...these banks have all gotten together in a profit driven fee oriented system to screw their customer's knowing that the other bank's will do the same.  The only reason we haven't changed banks is for this reason...and it would also probably lower our FICo scores to change and up our insurances too (almost any change now causes insurance co's to scam your rates too).  Good luck!

really Truth Detector..

AUTHOR: Ronny g - (USA)

POSTED: Tuesday, September 29, 2009

I would think if anything the banks would pay me to not post here..or put out a hit on me..(joking of course).

This has actually happened before with someone thinking the exact opposite of what I implied. The problem is (and as well may be why others have a less then honorable opinion about me) is just the nature of discussing things on a forum. Things are taken out of context..emotional state is assumed, sarcasm and facetiousness is misunderstood, implications are misunderstood..and at least on this forum..it takes too long for responses to come up...the order of responses get juggled, and you can't edit or remove anything if you realize you made an error or may be coming off the wrong way.

But it is what it is...I am not so concerned if anyone thinks something about me that isn't true..but I am concerned that someone that may be able to be helped..is too ignorant or presumptuous to actually read and comprehend a posting before they reply in haste and put foot in mouth.

atedat, are you BRAIN DEAD?

RonnyG is one of the most ardent shills for irresponsible bank account abusers (like you) ever to hit Ripoffreport. Hardly a day goes by when he isn't blaming banks for the overdrafting habits of folks like yourself.

Perhaps you might want to actually READ his posts before you make an a** out of yourself by calling him something he is not. RonnyG may be a little misguided and over sympathetic, but being a bank supporter paid to troll discussion boards defending overdrafts is not one of his duties.

atedat..I think you are misunderstanding my reply..

AUTHOR: Ronny g - (USA)

POSTED: Monday, September 28, 2009

I highly doubt the banks would out me on their payroll for posting here. I am currently the number one advocate for the customers against the bank. I think the problem is that my responses are facetious..so you are taking it wrong..read my comments again and you will see I clearly hold the banks tactics responsible for you issue.

As well...it gives me no pleasure to say that Ashley makes a good point in her last post..you have to be VERY careful with anything that can come in automatically like bill pays..very risky business if you keep a low balance.

Now where I agree with you 100%, is that the banks should use a little caution and assume the customer had an oversight..or there is fraudulent activity.

I know with my credit card..some other debit cards..and even some banks (well they used to years ago) would call you if anything out of the ordinary was going on..or is overdrafts were occurring...why?? Because the banks used to actually WANT to keep their customer happy..they were looking at the big picture..and wanting a long term relationship. Now they couldn't care less...if they can't make money off you one way..they will make it another..which is why with most banks today..it is almost like a second job to protect our own money..because if you turn your back for one second and drop the ball..the bank will take it and run..they are NOT on our team..they are the oppsing team. And it is a real shame it has come to this.

The reason I stated that you and your bank don't understand what overdraft protection is....is because you HAVE it..and for some reason you stated that the bank and yourself think you don't have it. The bank WANTS you to have this type of protection so they can allow overdrafts to occur and charge the excessive fees..so trust me..you have it.

Now, there are optional "services" you can enroll in such as a "transfer" service..which depending on your particular banks policies..can be much safer and less costly then the "courtesy" overdraft protection you have now. And apparently you were supposed to be signed up for this type of service I gather..but the bank messed up..at least according to what you report states..so keep trying to fight it..you may be able to recover all..or some of the fees..especially if you are not a chronic overdrafter. But if the bank doesn't really want you as a customer..it will be apparent by their actions..or lack thereof. Worth a shot..if you can speak to the right person..you may be able to recover something.

Best of luck and sorry you misunderstood my intent, unless you are mistaking me for someone else??? Because unless you are on some heavy medications....you will see on every single report I ever responded to here..I was not once on the banks side. So watch who you are calling a loser please.

Not okay

AUTHOR: Ashley - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, September 28, 2009

He is not telling you that it is okay.

This is your fault however. Any time you do a deposit on a weekend it posts the next business day. This is how all banks work.

Ronny: He said he has scheduled bill pays. These would have gone through whether he had overdraft protection or not. They are preauthorize transactions, the bank could not deny them. Nor would the bank know they are coming in. These are set up by the customer with a third party. The bank has no idea they are coming in until the day they are submitted. In this case Tuesday. This is one time that overdraft protection has nothing to do with it.

I would agree this is not ethical, but everything the bank did is legal. There's a big difference between legal and ethical.

On their payroll

AUTHOR: atedat - (USA)

POSTED: Monday, September 28, 2009

Hey Ronnie G.  How much is the banking industry paying you.  If you think it's ok to charge me 9 overdraft fees and then deposit my check all in the same day - then surely you're troll for these thieves.  What they are doing is immoral and to say that I can't manage my money is insulting.  Since you are all over these boards responding to everyone with a bank complaint I can only assume that that is your job.  What a loser.

Changing Banks

AUTHOR: atedat - (USA)

POSTED: Monday, September 28, 2009

This is why I'm changing banks.  A local bank knows me.  A local bank would give me a call and say there's a problem with my account.  How do I know this?  Before National City Bank swallowed my local bank this was the kind of customer service they provided.  My new bank also provides this service.  How do I know - because I have asked their current customers.  If you think it's ok to charge 9 - $30 overdraft fees while there is a deposit pending then you must surely be a troll.

Edgemans facts are correct...however....

AUTHOR: Ronny g - (USA)

POSTED: Sunday, September 27, 2009

What does this do to change the fact that the banks covered all those transactions (and charged the fees accordingly) when obviously the funds were not there to begin with? (since the bank did not clear your deposit yet).

Regardless of the facts that Edgeman stated..which clearly worked ALL in the banks favor..and proved to do absolutly nothing to "protect" you..it seems like your complaint is " They said I did not have overdraft protection although they admitted that I had applied for it years earlier and they just didn't know why it had not been set up. They refused to credit my account."

It is apparent in this case that both you AND whomever you were speaking with at the bank..do not understand what "overdraft protection" is..and what it does. And THAT is why there are so many reports here stating the exact, or very similar complaint.

Well, they were right...

AUTHOR: Edgeman - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, September 26, 2009

You'll have the same problem if you do this at your new bank.

Weekend deposits are considered to have been made on the next business day, which is normally Monday and the deposited funds made available on Tuesday. That's because the Federal Reserve isn't open on weekends.

However, this particular Monday was a bank holiday and the Federal Reserve isn't open on those days either. The next business day was Tuesday and that's when your deposit was considered to have been made and the funds should have been available by Wednesday. Unfortunately, the check that you wrote was cashed on Tuesday.

The bank was right to tell you that the other banks are the same in this regard. Banks don't control when the Federal Reserve or the ACH is open. You're in the wrong on this one.

I'm not certain why you wish to change banks since you're the one at fault. That's kind of like buying a Toyota vehicle, driving while drunk, getting into a crash and saying that you will only buy Dodge vehicles from now on.

Should mention your banks CEOs as well...

AUTHOR: Ronny g - (USA)

POSTED: Saturday, September 26, 2009

National City Bank survived the Civil War, the Great Depression, the World Wars  and the demise and comeback of Cleveland. But it couldnt withstand the decisions made over the past decade by its CEOs who stand to gain millions in golden parachutes.

Once a solid, trusted bank, National City saw its stock tumble and big layoffs of its workforce over the past year. Last week, after the federal government officials said they wouldnt include it in its bailout program, the bank agreed to be bought by PNC Finanical Group of Pittsburgh. Thats a special irony since the Cleveland Browns NFL team and Pittsburgh Steelers are bitter rivals.

What got National City into such a mess was the aggressive move into mortgages, led by former CEO David Daberko.

You might try contacting the new CEO..seems like a very generous man judging from this article...

After selling a majority stake in Miami-based City National Bancshares last November, all he did was take $60 million of the proceeds $60 million out of his own pocket and hand it to his tellers, bookkeepers, clerks, everyone on the payroll. All 399 workers on the staff received bonuses, and he even tracked down 72 former employees so they could share in the windfall.

The CEO of BofA may be a little busy to care...

AUTHOR: Ronny g - (USA)

POSTED: Saturday, September 26, 2009

Copied off CNN article from February 09...

(CNN) -- Bank of America CEO and Chairman Kenneth Lewis has been issued a subpoena by the New York State Attorney General's Office, which is investigating whether the bank violated state law by withholding information from investors, a source familiar with the investigation told CNN.

Or this article from 3 days ago...

CEO Lewis under fire as Bank of America probes grow personal

But it can't hurt to write him a letter..I found this article as well...

Letter To Bank of America CEO Results In Waived Overdraft Fees, Joy

Dated Thu Oct 16 2008..a women recovered $315.00 worth of outragoeus fees just by a letter to the CEO..imagine that?  Read the whole story on the "consumerists" website..heartwarming. Well you get the point.

As far as your report...hmmm..it would seem to me like you DID have overdraft protection..otherwise why was not any transactions declined once your balance reached zero? Since if the transaction that caused the initial overdraft was declined..you might not have received a SINGLE fee...not make sense?

Maybe you need to ask the CEO why your overdraft protection did not protect you from all those fees...lets see...9 overdraft fees @ $30 bucks a pop....$270.00..nice..seems the bank did it's job..would you not agree?

Wouldn't you have saved a bundle if you DIDN"T have the so called "protection"....something to ponder.
