My son opened a checking account with NCB because they are the only bank around here that gives a checking account with a debit card to under age children. Now I see why they do it. They must make a ton of $$ on overdraft fees from these kids.

The method they are using is when my son would use his debit card at an atm, it doesn't automatically deduct from his balance. He randomly recieved a notice of overdraft fees and when we called to find out what caused it, they said it was from an atm withdrawal several weeks prior! How does a cash withdrawal not show up until the end of the month? So when he called in to check his balance, it said he had the money in the account and then a few weeks later, they deduct the withdrawal and slap an od fee on it!

I immediately had him close his account and he did. Now, 2 weeks later, he recieved an overdraft fee in the mail again! It says it is from some $9.62 purchase or something made several weeks ago and they are saying it just came in. Now they want my 17 year old son to pay them another $46. When he closed his account 2 weeks ago, we figured we couldn't fight a bank, so he just paid them $162 in overdraft fees so he could close the account and be done with it. Now they want $45 more. I don't know when it will stop. If they are doing this to all teenagers, they are making soo much $$. Unfortunately, I have had adults telling me of the same type of problems with this bank though. I don't know because the bank I have my account at has never ever operated this way. My bank balance is immediately updated anytime I make any purchase with my card or atm withdrawal. How can the balance not automatically update when it is all computerized?

I really want to see something done about this and if there is anyone out there who can help, then go for it. I was prompted to submit this when I just read another complaint from Carmel, Indiana where our NCB location is.

They are getting me too

AUTHOR: Heather - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, September 04, 2008

Ok. about two weeks ago I went to my National City here in Grand Rapids, MI to dispute some overdraft fees that were charged to my accout. I thought that I should have been charged one (1) fee but they charged me 3. They informed me that it didn't matter when the charges got posted to my accout. It mattered when I spent my money. Ok fine, my mistake. and I let them have their money. Now this week, They have taken my whole paycheck and my account is still negitive. I keep an active register and I know when I spent my money, I have been charged 6 overdraft fees when I know exactly how I spent my money. I have it all on paper. I know that I should have been charged 2 fees because I went and bought groceries. I was expecting to pay 136 all together because I spent 24 dollars and 40 dollars and with 36 dollar fees on both of them it should have been 136 dollars. but instead of charging me fees on those two transactions, which were the last two I made the charged me for the 24 dollar one and 5 other transactions that I made before the final two.
Its so wrong. I am a single mom, I have no problem paying their stupid fees when I actually make a mistake, but when I am expecting to get paid and instead of getting a paycheck I get a negitive balance. Its sooo wrong, how do these people sleep at night.
I am now waiting for it to be 9:30 so i can go in there and see what they have to say about this, I am going to make sure I talk to the same manager that I talked to last time, We will see what their excuses are this time. I will post any developments.

you know I thought that 5/3rd was bad, but at least they were willing to admit that they made a mistake. Everytime I have been in National city I always get the same line "we don't make mistakes like that."

one more thing....does anyone else think that its terrible that if the bank makes a mistake they get to take away all my money today, but if I catch them and get them to admit it, I cant have my money back for two weeks. and how come they don't have to pay me a 36 dollar fee when they screw up.

You are ridiculous.

I work at National City bank. It's just like you mothers to blame the bank for overdrafts before you blame the kids. Why would you let your irresponsible son have a debit card if he doesn't manage his account properly? This is not the bank's error. It's your son's. Hopefully he will learn from his mistakes and learn to manage his account in the future. Also, hopefully, he will stop being weaned by his mother and accept responsibility for his actions.

Ann, I sympathize with your son's situation. Unfortnately, NCB does not only do this to teenagers. I am 51 & also went to close my account with NCB. I went into the bank & when closing my account, the teller even took my debit card & told me the account was closed. I was no longer able to access it online either. I thought that was it. WRONG! I had forgotten about a check for $10.00 that my daughters school never cashed & it was supposedly run through my "closed" account.

Instead of returning the check "Account Closed," to the sender, they ran it through my account as if it were still opened & charged me $35.00 for the overdraft fee. I was not aware that this could even be done. Since I thought this account was closed, I had not checked on it. Just by a fluke, I called the automated number to make sure my account was indeed closed.

I was shocked to learn that I now owe NCB nearly $550.00 in overdraft fees! I have no idea how in the world these charges accumulated & how they can do this to me. When I called the actual bank about this, I was told that my account was still open. I told the bank rep that it was not open & that I went into the bank myself & closed it & that the teller even took my debit card because it was no longer valid.

I was also no longer able to access my account online since it was closed. I have not received one statement from NCB indicating that I have any overdraft charges or that this account is even still valid. I'm livid over this & would never recommend this bank to anyone. Hang in there & good luck. I'm in Missouri, so that goes to show that they are doing this to people everywhere!
