No place should be able to charge a fee for cashing a check at the bank it is drawn on. The show of 2 ID's & the video recording assures this. There is not one bank that can show that they cashed a forged check unless there were bank employees in on it.When someone is making it easier to keep from being forged & showing proper ID's they should not have to pay a fee & the banks that have been charging these illegal fees should lose their ability to legally loan money & to do banking business! ALL ILLEGAL CHARGES SHOULD BE REFUNDED & TAKEN DIRECTLY FROM THE MAIN BANK REPRESENTATIVE FOR HIM GETTING THE BONUSES FROM THESE ILLEGAL CHARGES!

They are not illegal.

You may not like them but the fees are not illegal.

YOU are not a customer of theirs, it is really no different than you going to any other check cashing place.  The only difference is that the banks are usually less expensive.  You are being charged because there is overhead in having you cash checks.  I will give you a great example.  Several years ago, a bank that had a lot of business accounts didn't have this fee.  On Fridays you would see the line of customers 20-30 people deep, this was a branch in a busy area.  They started charging this fee and what happened, they added more tellers and the line went down to around no more than 3-4 people in line.

If you want to avoid this fee you can do one of a few things.

1. Have the person pay you in cash

2. Deposit the money in YOUR bank, as since you are their customer they won't charge you a fee.

3. Open an account at that bank.  Again since you are now a customer you won't be charged a fee

4. Have the person write the check for a few dollars more to cover the fee for you.

I wasn't aware that Indiana outlawed check cashing fees. Where in the state's code is that?
