I was hired to do work for this comapany several times. At first they seemed like nice enough people, but after doing several jobs for them, it was obvius that they were not willing to pay a fair amount for the work they wanted done. They also wanted me to travel long distances to do jobs for them with no consideration as to fuel or travel cost. They never had any compliants about my work.
I hadnt heard from them in a long time, when Brad Bowden called me and asked me if I would be interesed in doing some jobs for them that they had coming up with Lowe's
He sent me a background authorization to fill out. When i spoke with him and asked him if it would make a differnce in I had some convictions 25+ years ago, he said he could not use me on those job because of Lowe's policy of excluding any who had (ever) been convicted. When I explained to him that Lowes was acting in voilation of the law and made him aware or the following. and told them I would file a complaint against them and Lowes with the EEOC and the Labor Department. They fired me for "being disrespectful"

"job applicants with criminal records are protected under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits unlawful discrimination in the hiring process. In addition, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) also has established guidelines stating that any hiring decisions based on criminal background checks must consider the severity of the crime, the number of convictions, the length of time since the crime was committed and the relevance of the offense to the position being offered. In most cases, background checks only look back about seven to 10 years, so a youthful indiscretion should not haunt you the rest of your working life". [continued below]....

Dishonest and Disingenuos Company

AUTHOR: Billy - ()

First of all you are obviusly confused. the othe poster on this thread was concerned about this companies unwillingness to negotiate thier rates for contracter to take work from them where they would have to travel to remote site.

RE:Especially when the felonies and/or violent crimes were YOUR OWN doing.  How can you hold your faults and criminal record against MY EMPLOYER for 4 years???

As the other poster pointed out, they never had any intentions of actually doing any background report until I pressured them into actually following the law. The other problem I have with them, as well as Lowe's, is they seem to think that if someone has EVER had trouble with the law, they shouldnt be able to (EVER) work again. I wonder how if someone who may have made mistakes in thier past, that they NEVER be allowed to get gainful employment agian, how they expect that person will EVER be able to become a productive citizen EVER. How do you think that a person who finds themselves in that type of situation will ultimatley support themselves and thier family. Seems to me, that person may be forced to turn to illegal means to support themselves.

It may not be "your emplyers fault that the origal crimes were commited, but you can bet, they share some responsibilty for leaving people with little in the way of choice but to commit new criminal acts in order to support themselve. How well do you think that serves the saftey of the communities they they serve? ;-)

I work for many other companies similar to John Hallahan's and I have Never had any problems like those that I had with his. He thinks he can skirt the law, and be irrirsponsible to the community.  but that everyone else should have to obey those same laws.

#2 UPDATE Employee

Why are you so mad???

AUTHOR: KurtJohnson1961 - ()

I see the Title of this posting is "Dont do business with Nat Roll unless you want to get ripped off."  I have been a loyal employee and IC for them for over 4 years now.  I'd like to think I am the go-to guy in Houston, TX.  I have worked with 5 or 6 of the project managers there, even met two of them.  The only thing I see that I could argree with in this article is "they seemed like nice people".

If you dont think the pay is enough, why did you take the job?  How does that qualify for ripping you off, assuming you know what the pay was going in?

You are talking about being fired from the Lowe's project due to "convictions".  I too, am on the Lowe's Shed Build project coming up next month.  I had to fill out the same authorization form I assume you are talking about (for the safety of the customers homes we will be working in).  I was told the same thing, if you have any FELONIES or VIOLENT crimes, you will not be hired for this project.  When you say "convictions," were they Felonies and/or violent crimes?

Either way, trashing a solid companies reputation (or attempting to) is just plain wrong.  Especially when the felonies and/or violent crimes were YOUR OWN doing.  How can you hold your faults and criminal record against MY EMPLOYER for 4 years???

All BS

AUTHOR: I hope this guy goes to prison - ()

I was an employee at National Rollout during the Lowe's contract from start to finish. I can tell you that your background check was NEVER submitted to Lowe's.

So for you being denied the opportunity to do the builds for Lowe's was completely based on the owners opinion of your background. His rebuttal is completely false.

#4 UPDATE Employee ..inside information

Concerned employee

AUTHOR: Installit - ()

I have several concerns about this company that I hope will shed some light for them on there faults. To start I am offerd jobs that are at conideable distance with no compinsation for fuel. No one in managment seems to know what is going on or keep me informed of changes. I have acess to there portal but it does not work well at excepting or confirming what is going on with the jobs listed. There are jobs listed on my portal that were suposed to have been removed a long time ago as I was told they are no longer available. I was contected not long ago and repremanded for a job they said I did not show up for. I knew nothing of the job they had scheduled for me there was no notice on the portal no phone call no email to tell me I had been scheduled. I am willing to work for this company at a reduced rate for two reasons they supply the customer and hopefully steady ongoing work but when some of the jobs wont even cover your expenses whats the point. I am in bussiness to make a profit pure and simple I would think everyone would know thats not rocket science. It is not my intention to damage National Rollout with these coments but rather to shed light for them on my concerns. I hope we can work together to make this indever profitable and smooth sailing for us all.

sincere(free from pretense or deceit; proceeding from genuine feelings.)

Mr. John Hallahan,

Re "While we do understand these crimes we some 20+ years ago."

Actually, my convictions (which were domestic in nature) took place closer to 30 years ago at this point. I was still a child then, I am a responsible adult now. I paid my debt a long time ago and am even eligleble for a pardon, but your client, (Lowes( does not think that is good enough.

Unfortunatley, at this point I'm not fully confident, that you are as sincere(free from pretense or deceit; proceeding from genuine feelings.) as you are trying to make it look like.

What really makes me believe that you are not is. your statement on the phone to me saying because I brought up the fact that your company as well as every other should foloow the law concerning baground checks. It wasnt until I brought up the the fact that I might file a complaint and possibly sue you that, you finally agreed to actually (do a background screening). You seemed to think I was giving your staff a "hard time" and even went so far as to say I was fired and no longer eligle to work for you, because you felt, my insistance that you follow the law to be"disrespectful". I'm pretty sure, by the way you were speaking to me, that I was the one being disrespected. ;-)

I'm sorry that you were inconvenienced. by having to follow the rules. Just because your client (Lowe's) thinks they are to big to have to folowing the laws and giudlines, does not mean your using their policies as an excuse, excuses your company from its morol and lawful obligation to its employess, contractors, and prospective employess and contractors.

All companies are required to follow certain rules designed to protect people that find thenmselves in my position, with respect to previus convictions. When someone commits a crime, they are obliged by law to pay thier debt to society. Once that debt has been paid (almost 30 years ago in my case) they should not be punished for those indescretions for the rest of thier lives. Your client (Lowe's) seems to think otherwise.

It is companies like (Lowe's) who contribute to the failure of ex-convicts, who are trying to do they right thing and become productive members of society. If one is made to pay for crimes they may have commeteed as a youth 20, 30, 40, 50 or more years afterward, how do they expect those people to ever become productive, law abiding citizens? Lucky for me, I have beat the statisticts (by close to 30 years), but many others are as lucky, smart or determined,  as I am.

It is the hiring practices of companies like Lowes and many others like them, who are in part, responsible for recidivism rates. Your companies involvement with companies like this makes your hands dirty too.

Our Apologies

AUTHOR: NatRoll - ()

Mr. Billy Burger,

I sincerely apologize for your anger in our employment requirements.  At times we are required to do background checks.  This particular client that we wanted you to be an installer for, required NO FELONIES and/or NO ViOLENT crimes.  Unfortunately, you had 5 felonies against you.  While we do understand these crimes we some 20+ years ago, our client, not the national rollout company demanded you not be hired for this project.

We wish you luck in the future, you were a GREAT installer for the National Rollout Co., and I wish we could still work together.
