I hate to say it, but from my experience, it does no good to file a report with the New York State Attorney General's office regarding the completely fraudulent activities of Nationwide Warranty Company. I spent 6 months sending letters to various departments in New York State including the Office of the Attorney General, the Bureau of Consumer Frauds and Protection, the Department of Public Service, the Consumer Services Bureau and my local State Senator since every department referred me to a different department. In fact, the State of New York Department of Public Service finally sent me a form letter with the following checked off:

I am returning your correspondence because we are unable to identify an organization with jurisdiction over this matter. My last letter to the Bureau of Consumer Frauds and Protection (actually, to two different agents since I received identical letters from them just days apart) was sent on March 5, 2009, and has yet to be responded to despite asking them to look at www.ripoffreports.com and just ignore my particular complaint and shut these people down.

Much to my surprise, none of the agencies did anything more than to forward my complaint to Nationwide and then send me their response which was basically copying verbiage from their contract stating that service records were required and that I did not provide the necessary records.

As with most posters on this site, when I filed a claim I was informed that I needed to provide service records for the past three years. My claim was for a heat pump system. Heat pumps are closed systems and do not require maintenance. Therefore, there are no annual service records to provide as with an oil or gas heating system. Several letters later, Nationwide changed their responses to the various agencies to indicate that we only cover the primary unit. Again, heat pumps are generally zoned and require more than one unit for a large house. Besides, I was never asked which unit had malfunctioned. They just assumed it had to have been the secondary unit so they could refuse payment.

My experience with the customer service reps who have no manger; long waits on hold, etc. mirror many of the other complaints posted on this site. When I finally stumbled across this site and looked up Nationwide Home Warranty, I felt like I could have written almost any of the complaints by just substituting my appliance from theirs.

Obviously, until the New York State Attorney General actually reads the complaints he is receiving from victims across the country regarding this company, nothing will be done. I suppose it takes a local news reporter to get any actionnot that anyone could actually find these people.
