I unfortunely did fall for the same things reported here by numerous people. The stories are so similar they are scary. The low ball quote, all of the promises and threat of no deposit refund. Fortunately I found a company before they got my items and I am now in the process of reporting them to my credit card company, the govt agencies that regulate them and my next stop is the attorney gemeral of Florida.

I was promised a pick up date and of course that changed 4 times and Pauline there is either the best sales person and truly believes what she is told or the biggest liar in that company. "Everything is handled and I will deal with the people that you talked to" Translation: you found out that we have no idea as to who or when we may get this move. Their deposit scam is great. Sit there and wait for them not to show up or lose your money. They figure you are so far into this that they have got you and you will wait. Again unfortunately for them I am not the dumb person they thought I was.I figured it out before they could back me into a corner.

Short and sweet is why do they still exist? I will try every avenue I know to get them put out of their misery and not be able to rip people off.

yes, but...

Mario, I agree with you - to a point.

FMCSA gives out broker's licenses, not DOT. You can't really say to stop giving them out, because there are many, many good companies that are brokers as well as carriers. All of the major van lines each have broker's licenses as well. But the DOT & FMCSA need more enforcement power to be able to stop the companies that are abusing the system to which you (and not I) belong. They jsut don't ahve enough investigators to really do anything with all the new laws they've passed. Catch-22.

I myself got taken by a scam broker who hired a scam mover. The mover's various companies are now all out of business, and the broker's seriously floundering financially. Karma does work.

The people who do pay large deposits for their moves are people who just don't know that this problem exists. I certainly didn't know that there are thousands of rogue movers out there just waiting to take your money and there's nothing I nor the government can do about it. I do what I can to help educate people, which is why I so many of these RipOff Reports.

This site gets the word out; it shows up very high on search engine results, so there are probably a lot of people who have cancelled their contracts after reading complaints about the mover they've just hired. And there are other websites that concentrate on bad movers, but in deference to the owner of ROR, I won't say specifics.

Do you know which brokers are members of AMSA? I'd be happy to look at them further, maybe send some more evidence to the AMSA. I definitely do not agree with their membership policies in many cases, as well. It's too easy for a brand-new mover who's just re-opened after closing down a fine-laden, complaint-riddled, hostage-load-taking moving company to join the AMSA.

You do not HAVE to work with them. I know it's not my business to play with, but that short-term hit financially will even out in the end when the brokers' reputation is shot and the customers they normally take from you will be looking for good movers. Just have patience.

SHARON YOU HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS

AUTHOR: Mario - (U.S.A.)

Sharon, i always see you answering to all the complaints But the blame or most of the blame now goes to the us dot.And let me explain:
Now most of the complaints are towards the brokers who ask a large deposit amount and then look for carrier who don't have the money that brokers have to spend for internet ads
So why in the world, the us dot keep granting brokers licenses and be ok with it.

i would never pay someone $3000 deposit for my move, but most of the people do it anyway.
If you know so much, maybe you should talk to someone up there and stop the brokers from operating at all and let them work like movers do.SOME BROKERS ARE ALSO A MEMBER OF THE AMSA!!!!! WHAT A *&*& JOKE!!!
THIS BUSINESS IS GOING SOUR!!
AND GOOD MOVERS ARE FORCED TO WORK WITH THESE PEOPLE OR STAY HOME AND LOOK AT YOUR BILLS PILE UP

Discount Movers

AUTHOR: Sharon - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, April 11, 2007

There is no Discount Movers in Largo Florida, but I'm glad you got your stuff with only the broken plate, though.

Sorry you had to resort to threats to get NRS to refund your deposit. I am surprised, though. Usually they don't refund the deposits for a mover not showing, it's their classic "it's not our fault the mover didn't show" bit.

Evidently my threats worked about reporting them to the Attorney General in Florida. Lo and behold the $1200 deposits I gave them were credited back to me this last week and I never even filed a dispute yet.

Goes to show you if you know how and who to contact or at least threaten, these clowns they will back off. By the way they did under estimate the weight by 1300 lbs.

On the positive side the company I did hire got my stuff from Colorado to Florida in 4 days and the only damage was a broken serving plate and 1 glass. They did what they said and were 180 degrees from these clowns. So if you need a company contact Discount Movers based out of Largo I believe. They were professional and no bs. There price was within a couple of hundred dollars and it was a pleasure doing business with them.

Disputing charges

AUTHOR: Sharon - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, March 21, 2007

If you paid the deposit by credit card, dispute the charges. NRS did not fulfill the contract by providing you with a mover. They will counter by saying it is not their fault the movers didn't show up, but you hired them to provide you with a mover and they did not. Stand firm. If not, go to small claims court to get your money back.

I'm very surprised NRS even has merchant accounts left with credit cards. They have had years of a reputation of this exact same problem, and people have been disputing thier deposits left and right.

What name is the depoist charge showing up under with your card?
