In December of 2001 I was going from Missouri to Louisiana with my two children to visit my family. In Mississippi I got vilently sick and was dehydrated. I had to call an ambulance to bring me to the nearest hospital, which was only three minutes away.

Immediately I started recieving bills from the ambulance service, which I could not pay. I am mentally and physically disabled, and I have to live off of I very small disability check each month. By the time I pay rent, utilities, phone bill, insurance, my credit card, my medications, and personal hygiene items I have nothing left to pay on an ambulance bill.

I have Missouri Medicaid, and they told me to inform the ambulance service that if they wanted to get paid by Missouri Medicaid that they just had to fill out a simple form asking for a Missouri Medicaid Provider Number. Once they recieved the provider number the ambulance service would send a claim to Missouri Medicaid and they would be paid. The ambulance service decided not to do this, instead they started sending me bills then they turned my bill over to NCO Financial Systems,Inc.

For years the collection agency stopped calling me because I kept telling them that I have no money to pay the. The phone calls stopped until Tuesday, March the 6th. The bill collector told me that I owed the original $540 plus $200 in interest fees. He wanted me to pay up or make monthly payments. I told him just like I told the NCO representative in 2002, that I am mentally and physically disabled living on a very small disability check each month, and that by the end of the month I have no money left to pay them anything.

He kept insisting that I begin to pay something every month, and I kept telling him that I could not do it. He would not get off the phone with me so I hung up on him. I know for a fact that medical ficilities and ambulance services right off thousands of dollars each year and claim it on their taxes. The hospital that I went to in Mississippi filed for a Missouri Medicaid Provider Number, sent in a claim and were paid. The ambulance service had the option to do the same thing. They decided not to get paid.
