Today — January 12, 2015 — I had trouble getting my new NETGEAR Router to go "wireless" and googled netgear tech support for help. The number 866-486-3191 came up. When I dialed an Indian-voiced woman answered immediately. Soon I had to download join.me and "accept" her getting control of my computer. Immediately, the hair was rising on the back of my neck. She checked my "network utility" and sent "ping" messages which made me even more suspicious. She then began a long discourse about "problems with my firewall" and my network being compromised, etc. etc. Then she began talking money . . . I put her on hold, called my IT guy who googled the number and found a "rip-off" report. I hung up immediately, deleted join.me, as well as the netgear genie app, then emptied the trash. I restarted the computer and then changed my computer password. BEWARE!

It's not Netgear Tech Support You Called

AUTHOR: sharkboy242 - ()

POSTED: Wednesday, January 14, 2015

Like any google search you make, the paid advertisements appear on top of the page and in this case your search brought up a support vendor on the top.  Your mistake was to inadvertently call a vendor that appeared in your search, rather then Netgear itself.  You have to be careful when you search for anything online, be able to sort through paid ads versus non-paying results, and understand that what happened to you in this case was the result of your not taking the time to comb through the results of your google search properly.  You never called Netgear Technical Support.  That number you called is listed as belonging to Reliable Tech Support, which is listed under helpdeskwiz.com.  Their web site plainly states that they are an independent company providing technical support.  This is not and should not be a complaint against Netgear Technical Support since you never were in contact with Netgear Technical Support.
