A credit card in my husband's name was sent to our rental property in a different city that we did not authorize. The credit card could have been activated by phone or online. The property in question is owned by a small business. How my husband's name got printed on this card is a mystery. It took me 45 minutes to go through the maze of menu options and basically had to lie in order to talk to a human being who would not help me or answer questions. After repeated threats (nicely), he finally agreed to transfer me to a supervisor. I was then put on hold for 30 minutes. Finally, a customer service rep answered and it was more of the same. She would not let me talk to a supervisor and said this sort of thing is "common practice". When I asked her how she got my husband's name, she said it would either come from a friend (??????) or they purchased the name from a marketing list (most likely). The tenant was concerned to receive a legitimate credit card in my husband's name at her address and alerted us. Not only is this an invasion of our privacy, it exposes us to fraud and compromises our financial security. If you are reading this and have had a similar experience, write your senator. This practice is wrong and should be stopped. Haven't the banks screwed us enough already?
