I signed up for a free Newsletter for work at home businesses. They send you emails a few times a day. I have answered several of these job posts - and they all seem strange. So, if your looking for legitimate work at home work, don't waste your time with this company.
One example:

Yesterday, I got approved as a writer. You have to show proof that you have submitted articles to ezine and have been approved. They said they would hire me, I could start work this weekend. The pay for each 500 word article is $1.50. All articles are new, original articles. No copying from other sources. No scraping. After you submit your article, the copy is no longer yours. You don't get name credit. It belongs to the company. The company does not even give you their name. The person who contaced me was a "recruiter" for writers.

I have checked out other jobs for writers, they pay $15.00 - $25.00 per article, I know someone who works for the company that creates EHOW articles, that is what he gets paid.  But, they require a degree in Journalism to apply for a job.

This company that I applied to is probably trying to buy cheap articles, then turn around and sell them and make a lot of money while ripping people off!!!

Perhaps I am stupid? But, I don't believe anyone can write an "original" 500 word article in under 30 minutes.  That would make your hourly wage $3.00.  It takes me about an hour to write one article, more if I have to do tons of research. Wow!! Minimum was is $8....something right. But, if your an "independant contractor" employers can rip you off!!

(NEXT IS THE EMAIL I RECEIVED FROM THIS WOMAN!!)

This is the copy of the name and email that I received from the "writing recruiter"

We are seeking long term article writers/bloggers.  This is a steady contract position and you can expect to receive between 30-90 articles to write per week.  These positions can result in years of steady work provided that the quality of your work is consistent.

Our rates vary depending on the quality of your work with rates as low as $1/500 words.  But there is opportunity to earn more as we occasionally have projects that pay up to $15 per article.  The rate will be determined after you have provided several samples of your work prior.  Once the rate is determined and is accepted by you the it is not subject to re-negotiation.

GUIDELINES

Our clients are mainly looking for SEO articles and product reviews.  This will comprise 90% of the material that you write.  The other 10% will be comprised of press releases, reports and eBooks.  Most articles will be 400-600 words in length

The minimum number of articles you must be able to do per 24 hours is 5 500 word articles.  You must also be available to write at least 5 days per week.

The articles should be well researched and interesting to read. Articles must be well written and free of any grammar and spelling errors.

The topic of the articles will vary however they will be on topics related to various niches such as weight loss, Internet marketing, business, health and fitness, home and garden, etc.

All work must be 100% original and pass Copyscape and Plagiarism Detect. We will own all copyrights to all work upon payment. Articles are not to be reused in any way for any reason (including resell, reuse, re-write or give away). Scraped content will not be accepted.

Any articles that are not submitted on time or do not meet the guidelines will not be paid for.  Detailed instructions will be given for every project along with a folder of basic writing tips so as long as you follow the rules there should be no problem.  In fact, it is rare that articles are rejected when writers follow the guidelines.

You must complete at minimum 10 articles in order to receive an initial payment. If you let us know that you are quitting working with us regardless of the circumstances or disappear from the job before 10 articles have been completed a fee of $10 will be deducted from any payment that you are owed. This fee is charged in order to recover the loss of paying for the services of the recruiter that located you to work for us.

PAYMENTS

Payment will be delivered weekly on Fridays via Paypal for the articles completed during that week.

This is an independent contractor position. You will invoice us for the services that you perform for us.

First of all, this isn't really a scam, although highly unethical on their part. It would be a scam if they lied about paying or were trying to get your money. I think they are honest about paying what they say for the work they perform.

That being said, this is is the next worse thing. They are just cheap SOBs who want to take advantage of people. However, I honestly think they are the ones who are going to get screwed. I did the math the same as you when I originally saw the post and figured $2 was a joke (the pay is now $1 for 500 words, looks like hey lowered it).

Did I get angry? No. I figured that these people were only screwing themselves over. If they were going to pay that, they would only end up working with ESL writers or people who never made it past the 7th grade. Frankly, I am kinda laughing about that. They have run this ad on problogger many times, so I am wondering if that's because they need a lot of writers or if they can't find anyone.

"Ability to research and write engaging articles using solid writing skills." for $1 an article? Don't make me laugh.

You are right that there aren't laws to protect contractors, but we don't really need them. As a freelancer, I know there are plenty of good companies that will pay a fair price for my services.

As a freelancer, your best protection is to be good at what you do. You don't need the government's support, you just need to know good companies won't be able to take advantage of you if you want quality.
