Complaint Review: North American Power
North American Power BAIT AND SWITCH/Deceptive Practices-DON'T SIGN- YOU'LL REGRET IT! --Tells you one thing, bills you another! DECEPTIVE SHADY PRACTICES, LIKELY A CLASS ACTION SUIT TO COME ! Nationwide
For six months last year I kept getting flyers in the mail from NAP urging me to switch to them as my electric delivery service; they boasted much lower kwh rates than National Grid, with whom I've been a consistent customer for 16 years.
Being a senior on a very fixed income and costs of things rising as they have, I decided to look into it & called them. The man I spoke with told me the customary hype, how much $$ they would save me etc etc. Being skeptical by nature, I was on the fence. He then said "If you sign up today we'll send you a $50 Via Gift Card". I was like, well, okay, what the hell; I'll give it a shot.
At NO time did I ever receive a printed contract from NAP. I called exactly six times and also emailed three times since I signed up in Aug 2015; I got a different story every single phone call and to today's date ( 03/21/16) still have no contract from them.
The last time I called & questioned I was told "No, you don't get a FIFTY Dollar Gift Card, you get a TEN dollar gift card.---you only get the fifty if you use in excess of certain # kWh." And still no contract.
Needless to say, this was NOT what the man who enrolled me said. This tricky 'bait and switch' tactic was symptomatic of a much larger issue, being that my rates have continued to climb and climb despite my six year history at this address of VERY low usage of electricity.
I am quite mindful in having a nearly negative carbon footprint; I use solar outdoor lights and candles indoors and keep the bill for my home under $50 most months of the year, have seasonal summer spikes occasionally when I have to use AC, but even considering those things there's no way justify the three-figure bills NAP has been assessing me.
I called National Grid to ask if this was a typical complaint and the woman agent said yes it was, sadly, lots of them from Natl Grid customers who switched delivery services to NAP.
They give you the promotional very low rate and then after that promotion expires, they are SUPPOSED to contact you & ask you if you want to continue at the new rate, but I never received any phone calls/emails/snail mail about this.
When I called NAP today to tell them I am terminating the contract, they STILL tried to keep me by pushing a lower rate than they've been charging me but I stood my ground and threatened to report them to the PUC as well as the RI Atty Genl' office/Consumer Affairs Division.
They said yes, they'd terminate my contract but only if the last meter reading was within 5 days of my phone call, then they'd stay on my account until next month, and that if it was more than 5 days, they'd be on my account for two more months !!
So that's two more months NAP gets to screw me. I am LIVID over this and am going forward with formal complaints against this company, who have tons of rip-off reports and negative reviews on the internet. DON'T SIGN UP with them !
You'll absolutely regret it !
P.S.--I am SO not interested in hearing from the NAP paid guns who come on sites like this to attempt to intimidate customers who post these rip-off reports. I can document every single syllable I've written, so consider that your Troll Repellant.
