Consumers be warned that large puppymills such as this one only survive because you purchase their puppies.

Lucy and Edward Gerold put your names and address on your website.

Put pictures of your land and kennel online so people can see the conditions your dogs live under.

Perhaps puppymill puppies are cheaper then other puppies but in the long run you will foot a large bill and cry many tears for sicknesses and weaknesses that will appear in time in a dog bought from a puppymill.

Ill health with cataracts, epilepsy, bone disorders and other weaknesses show up in dogs who were born from the weakened bodies of a puppymill mother.

Hundreds of litters available at one time.

Hundreds of mother dogs waiting in line to be bred.

PETA WHERE ARE YOU ?

Plead to the consumer!
Stop buying puppies from puppymills!

Let the puppymills get stuck with the puppies for once which will force them to stop breeding the adults.

The longer you feel sorry for the puppymill puppies and buy them, the longer the hundreds of caged adults will continue to be bred from one heat to another until old and no good and then killed.

The longer you buy the longer you allow puppymills to hold back puppies to raise them to be caged adults used for breeding.
Stop the cycle by not permitting yourself to buy puppies from puppymills.

Caps Report

AUTHOR: Ann - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, April 05, 2011

CAPS Complaints
CAPS receives consumer complaints from people who have purchased puppies over the internet. Most of these puppies have mild to very serious medical problems, including hereditary defects. On May 11, 2006 CNN aired a lengthy segment entitled, Sick Puppies Dog Some Online Purchasers. In this story on internet puppy sales, CNN Consumer Correspondent Greg Hunter interviewed CAPS President Deborah Howard, who addressed the issues involved with internet puppy buying and showed video footage of puppy mills that sell to The Hunte Corporation, the largest puppy brokerage facility in the country. The story focused on Celebrity Kennels (aka Wizard of Claws) in Florida, who obtain many of their puppies from Hunte. Celebrity Kennels sells puppies both through a strip mall store front, where they show puppies to consumers who sit in a waiting room, and over the internet. Just because pet shops and online sellers have celebrity customers doesn't mean that these puppy merchants obtain puppies from reputable breeders.

Summary of a few CAPS' Internet Puppy Complaints North Country Pets (www.mixedbreedpups.com), Ironton, Minnesota
Malti-poo with Portacavel Shunt who died four days after purchase. Pages listing litters and upcoming litters immediately arouse suspicion that this breeder has a puppy mill. There are numerous dogs and puppies at this facility. The owners deliberately cross breed their dogs to produce mixed breed puppies, also know as "designer" dogs. Another indication of a puppy mill: the owners do not allow prospective buyers on the premises, claiming that humans transmit diseases to puppies. In fact, the opposite is true. Dogs have certain worms and illnesses that can be transmitted to humans (for example, roundworms, sarcoptic mange and giardia). The following paragraph is quoted from their website: Can we visit and see the pups? - We used to answer this with a resounding YES! However, we recently had an experience with a pup that became sick shortly after going to her new home. The pup recovered nicely, but the only way this pup could have been exposed to this virus was through casual contact with visitors, as we have NEVER dealt with this virus before. No, you don't need to worry about getting a pup from us, but we really do need to safeguard the health of our puppies, for the puppies' sake, our sake, and the buyer's sake. Unfortunately, even the most diligent, clean, well-meaning visitors can bring a disease to our kennel that can spell disaster for our puppies. Think of it this way - hospitals don't allow visitors into the nursery area. Baby and Puppy immune systems are not fully functional for months.
And yet another sign of a mill is the fact that the puppies are not raised in a home: Are the pups raised in the house? - No. Frankly, no-one could have litters of puppies like this in a clean, healthy, environment in the house. And, we have a small grooming shop and boarding kennel, so we're at work in our kennel anyway. Mike and Lucy generally begin their day with the puppies at about 6 am, and finish up about 5 pm, with a final walk for the dogs at about 9 pm. The kids, Elizabeth (12), Charles (5), Rachel (3), and Eleanor (2) love to play with the pups. The babysitter has a scheduled time to bring the three little ones out the "shop" to play with puppies every day.

CAPS HAS A COMPLAINT ON THEIR SITE!!!!!!!!!!

AUTHOR: Ann - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, January 17, 2010

You sound like a lunatic!  People who purchase puppies purchase them for love and to be a part of their family. You are not part of caps if you have not seen the complaint.  You sound like a person who has never loved an animal and just feel like taking part in a complaint you know nothing about.  You cannot possible raise hundreds of healthy dogs and keep mass breeding them in good conditions.  Why couldn't they allow inspectors to see the conditions of the place?  Just like any other business?   Get you head out of the dirt and open the eyes!

AR's out to shut down ALL breeders

AUTHOR: mommabear - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, January 16, 2010
People are NUTS these days..they seem to know everything even when they have not even visited this place or bought a pup from them.

And Luci, there is a new one out, H1N1 (swine flu) has made it way to dogs now. Yep same strain and they can get it from people... I don't blame her for not allowing visitors any more! and it's not like she is the only one who has that rule. I know show breeders that have the same policy.

Also, there are not hundreds of reports against this kennel..and NONE ON CAPS!!! I am a member of CAPS.. with all the pups they sell, in the last 36 months (BBB) they had ONE complaint against them and it had to do with the contract, and it was resolved.. they have an A+ rating!

Now for MY experience.... I bought a beautiful little shihpoo and she was healthy and beautiful and very well socialized. I send people her way all the time and they are also happy with their puppies and the kennel and owner.

These are good people who may have a lot of dogs, but that doesn't make them a "puppy mill".. The person making this report is leaving a lot out, I can see that myself.

Grow up for crying out loud people! get off the animal rights trip.. animals are property and they have a right to breed and sell puppies. And I would buy from them again.. Just waiting for her to have a litter of yorkies..I have been waiting months for her to have a litter..

Very positive and professional experience with this kennel

AUTHOR: Zip-r-chick - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, January 22, 2009

I wanted to comment about North Country Kennels as a consumer and a proud Mama of a Yorkipoo named "Cricket" that we have had for almost 3 years. Cricket was bred and born at NCK, and all of my interactions with Lucy and Cindy were professional and positive. I was looking for a puppy with the natural inclination to be a therapy dog.

When my turn came up on the waiting list, Cindy told me that the puppies that were available were not the best suited for what my needs/desires were. Although I was so incredibly anxious to get a puppy, I appreciated their honesty and concern for placing the perfect disposition dog in my care. I went through about 3 more puppy selections before "puppy B" became my Cricket. This kennel knows the puppies in the litter...they know the personalities, and all without being prompted or placing you on hold to get the information. When my parents had to put their Bichon to sleep a few months ago, they knew how amazing my experience had been with NCK, and what an incredible dog Cricket is...so they got a new Pekepoo puppy from them.

When my Mom called and spoke with them, she mentioned the parents of the litter and they knew exactly which puppy it was they were interested in. They described her to a "t" and knew her personality without having to refer to notes. My experience with NCK has been nothing but positive, and my puppy was even more wonderful than they had described. She is a happy and very well-socialized dog. She had been put in an area of the kennel where boarders or grooming clients came in, and as a result was loved on and met many different people. The kids at NCK also interact with the puppies. This is so evident in Cricket, and she is amazing with children and has a love for everyone.

I can say with all honesty and sincerity that I plan to "adopt" my next furbaby from NCK...I did a lot of "homework" on breeds, breeders and training before deciding to get a puppy from them. Everything they tell you from training to breed characteristics is right on the money. I am a firm follower of the ideology of the Monks of New Skete and Karen Pryor Clicker Training, and NCK was of the same mind and heart.

I WOULD LOVE TO VISIT THIS PUPPY MILL

AUTHOR: Ann - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, September 28, 2008

North Country Kennel has over 250 puppies on average and if I am counting correctly over 100 breeding dogs at one time. Your daughter may have enjoyed working there at 17. I would hope the dogs were cared for 7 days a week! But why is no one allowed there? Inspectors? Why so secretive? A small family farm? Are you kidding me? 100's of dogs? Come on!!!!!!! Who is Lucy protective of, her dogs or her business? If she loved dogs so much why didn't she stick to grooming? Because she seen big dollar signs with this internet breeding system. You stated everytime a dog dies Lucy cries? She must be crying everyday. That would be a fun business. Lucy did not care that my dog died and was a defective little angel. Her warranty is a farce and she knows it. A nice family business, I think not! I believe your 17 year old daughter cared deeply about these animals but someday she will realize it isn't right to breed hundreds of dogs in one place. What happens to the older dogs? The ones that can't breed anymore? The puppies that don't sale? I have been getting quite an education on "puppy mills" in Minnesota and am horrified. Lucy does all the right things? Are you kidding? When we picked our puppy up with the check in hand, they needed an additional 100.00 for tax money. The right thing? No, I care about animals, I loved our little dog and we saved one little puppy and that I can be proud of. Ann

Owner - North Country Kennel responds to accusations

AUTHOR: Lucy Gerold - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, September 13, 2008

Hello,

The accusations made in the report really have no base. This person has not purchased a puppy from us. She apparently has something against any breeder that raises dogs for profit.

The reality is that we care about our dogs. They are well cared for, very well socialized, and we support our customers after the sale. Our puppies are guaranteed, temperament included, including a 2 year congenital health guarantee. Not only do we guarantee our puppies, but we stand behind it. It's simply not possible to raise dogs without an occasional problem, but we work hard to resolve any issues that arise.

We employ 2 full time staff members, besides my husband and myself. In addition, we have 7 part time staff members as well. Weekdays, we have at least 5 people on staff caring for the dogs. Weekends and holidays, we have no less than 3 people on staff.

We have a regular parasite control and vaccination routine that we follow with the puppies. Wormings begin at 2 weeks of age, and continue every other week until the puppies go home. Vaccinations begin at 5 weeks of age, with a Parvo and Distemper combination vaccination. Each and every puppy is thoroughly checked over by our vet before the puppies go home. She comes to the kennel twice a week to check puppies and handle any veterinary issues that need to be addressed. Our puppies go home with a health record, and packet of Puppy Care Information. It's quite common for the vets that care for the new owner's puppies, to positively comment on the care that goes into this packet, as well as the condition of the puppies. We are happy to help customers with concerns after the puppies go home.

I'm proud of how we raise our dogs. Years ago, as a Certified Master Groomer, when we decided to raise dogs because our grooming customers were looking for quality puppies, we made the decision that we would never raise our dogs in wire cages. Our small dogs are housed inside, in a 40 x 80 finished, heated pole building. We built the building with in-floor heat, which is very comfortable for the dogs. The floors are warm, not cold. They have solid walled pens, right on the floor, which are easy to clean. Each pen has sawdust and shredded paper bedding, which is changed very day, including weekends and holidays. Because the pens are open at the top, it's easy for us to reach in and handle the dogs and the puppies. We feel this is very important - socialization is important for the happiness of the adult dogs, and it's important for the mental development of the puppies. Each dog has at least one room-mate to ensure that they are never lonely.

Our larger dogs are kept outside. These dogs have large pens to play in. The pens range in size from 10 x 16 to 10 x 40. Each dog has access to specially built insulated dog houses. Frankly, most of the dogs prefer to sleep on top of the dog houses, rather than inside. Each dog has one or two room-mates, so they are never lonely.

We do not obviously post our address on the website for a very specific reason. We no longer allow visitors. It's not because we have something to hide. It's not because we don't wish to entertain customers. It's simply to protect the health of our dogs, especially our puppies.

Up to 3 years ago, we did allow visitors. In the spring of 2005, a brand new dog virus emerged, Canine Influenza. This virus mutated from a horse virus, and no dog had immunity. It came to us from a visiting customer, who had either visited another dog kennel, or had a dog at home with the virus. It made each and every puppy and dog sick in our kennel, as no dog had immunity. We lost over 30 puppies in a month. You might think that the financial hardship was what caused us to suspend visits, but the reality of these deaths is what hit us the hardest. You can't imagine how hard it was to go to the kennel each morning, after being up late with the puppies, to find more sick or dead puppies. It was horrific. We simply will not allow something like this to happen again. When will the next new disease emerge? This decision costs us customers, but so be it. We'd rather lose a few customers, than put our puppies through this kind of thing again.

Take a look at the website. You'll see that it's probably the best website out there, loaded with information about dogs, dog care, training, etc. The care that I have put into the website is a reflection of the care that goes into our puppies. Think about it, people don't take pride in one thing. People that take pride in a thing, take pride in everything they do. I take pride in the website. I take pride in the fact that I'm a Certified Master Groomer. We all take pride in the care and love that goes into our dogs. I take pride in the photos I take of the puppies. We all take pride in the fact that we stand behind our guarantee. We all take pride in the care that we give to our customers after the sale. My husband, Mike (Edward) and I take great pride in our 4 wonderful children (who socialize the puppies too.)

Why don't we give out references to past customers? We don't want to bother those customers. Privacy is important now-a-days. Would you like to be hassled by countless calls? I think not. Many of our customers tell us that they'd be happy to give referrals, but with this request several times a day, they'd soon weary of the calls. So, we have posted numerous testimonials from customers, on the website. These testimonials are un-solicited, simply a sampling from emails that we have received from customers that have purchased puppies in the past. Many of our customers have purchased a second puppy, and some have purchased several through the years. One customer out on Long Island, runs a beauty shop. Her dog, "Lucy", is quite the ambassador for our kennel. She has sold over a dozen puppies for us!

Take a look at the website: http://www.mixedbreedpups.com . Give us a call if you have any questions: 218-546-2811.

Sincerely,

Lucy Gerold

#7 Consumer Suggestion

This person has obviously never visited this kennel.

AUTHOR: Janelle Riley - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, September 13, 2008

My 17 year old daughter Jenna worked at North Country Kennels last summer. Although she worked very hard, she enjoyed the experience. This is a family operation where Lucy and her husband and four children personally care for the dogs seven days a week. They never leave town overnight because Mike doesn't want to leave the dogs in the care of anyone but family. Every day my daughter and the other employees carefully cleaned all of the kennels, petted the dogs, and held the puppies. They let the dogs play together whenever they can.

This is a small family farm that raises chickens and pigs. The Gerolds raise goats because the dogs think it's a treat to drink goat milk.

Lucy is very protective of her kennel. She used to let visitors come to the kennel, but puppies would get sick from all of the traffic. Now she is very careful about not allowing visitors to harm the puppies.

Every time a dog dies, Lucy cries. There was a puppy born with cleft pallete when Jenna first started working at the kennel. They tried to nurse the puppy by hand, but they could not get it to suckle. The little puppy died when it was only a few days old. Because the puppy was so sick Jenna did everything to make the puppy comfortable. She held it for hours until it died in her arms. She cried all night. These people truly care about the welfare of animals.

This is not what I call a "puppy mill." There are a lot of people (like the person who wrote this report) who have a personal agenda. They say they care about the dogs, but then they go after someone like Lucy that does the all the right things that means that they really don't care at all.

You are reporting on a puppy mill.....

AUTHOR: Rhonda - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, January 02, 2007

Have you considered reporting the poor conditions to the local sheriff or Humane Society? I know in my area the local Humane Society has seized a few puppy mills for just such conditions after some neighbors or someone reported the conditions. Some of the dogs were in poor condition with jaw detiorioration and other health conditions. If you are truly concearned and have proof, I would urge you to contact the appropriate legal authorities. These numbers can be found in the phone book or online.

Minnesota puppymills - More then 300 dogs. CONSUMER BEWARE

AUTHOR: Susana - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, October 09, 2006

McDuffee, Gary and Wanda
Gary and Wanda McDuffee
Happy Tails Kennel
1805 Riverview Dr.
Little Falls, MN 56345
41-B-0190

Approximately 380 dogs and an undetermined number of puppies in the kennel

Breeds: Poodles, Bichon Frisees, West Highland Terriers, Yorkshire Terriers, Shih Tzus, Pekingese, Lhasa Apsos, Italian Greyhounds, Scottish Terriers, Beagles, Pugs, Dachshunds, Cairn Terriers, Miniature Schnauzers, Airedale Terriers, Chihuahuas, Maltese, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Cocker Spaniels

Happy Tails Kennel was a U-shaped building with a peaked metal roof, metal doors accessing it from all sides, and indoor/outdoor cages on three of its four longest walls (the wall facing the direction of Riverview Dr. did not have cages). Each of the outside walls had about 50 cages, while the inside walls had about 40.

Each of the outside cages was raised about three feet above the ground on wooden stilts. They measured about two feet wide, two feet long, and two feet high and had untreated, thin-gauge wire walls and ceilings (3.6(a)(2)(xii)-Primary enclosures) and treated-wire floorings. The cages were framed underneath by rusting metal beams (3.1(c)(1)(i)-Surfaces). Stainless-steel water buckets were attached to the outside wall of each outdoor cage. Each enclosure housed two dogs.

A paved walkway ran underneath and next to the cages along the outside of the building's longest walls. The ground directly under the cages was dirt, and several weeks of fecal accumulation was piled underneath the cages amidst stagnant, standing water filled with algae. The outdoor cages on the inside of the U (the outdoor cages that faced each other) also were positioned over dirt ground and had several weeks' accumulation of feces piled under them. Rain had created small pools of feces-filled water underneath the cages and in the walkway in between the rows. In addition, several days' accumulation of feces was observed inside about 10 percent of the cages, most of it dried and piled up in the center of the cage (3.11(a)-Cleaning of primary enclosures) 3.1(f)-Drainage and waste disposal). Flies were swarming around the outside of the facility (3.11(d)-Pest control).

The wooden building siding that served as the back wall of these cages was covered with fecal stains, fur, and algae build-up (3.1(c)(1)-Surfaces).

A West Highland Terrier had feces-stained mats covering its chest and belly (2.40-Vet care) in a cage on the wall opposite the direction of Riverview Rd. There were two cages housing Airedale Terriers that lacked six inches of space above the tops of the dogs' heads (3.6(c)(1)(iii)-Primary enclosures).

Indoor cages
The indoor cages were of the same design and dimensions as the outdoor cages and were accessed from the outside cages by metal doggie doors. The indoor cages had metal self-feeders attached to the cage walls. Flooring was concrete.

A room closest to the parking area of the building contained indoor cages about 2.5 feet wide, 1.5 feet long, and 1.5 feet high. These cages were stacked on top of each other, three high in six different stacks. Each housed a single dog. One cage housed an Airedale Terrier, another housed a Sheltie, and another a Cocker Spaniel; each dog was about 1.5 feet long from tips of their noses to the bases of their tails (3.6(c)(1)(i)-Primary enclosures). These cages lacked six inches of space above the tops of the dogs' heads (3.6(c)(1)(iii)-Primary enclosures).

Metal trays underneath the treated wire floorings of the stacked cages served to catch feces and debris. The walls and tops of the cages were made of untreated, thin-gauge wire (3.6(a)(2)(xi)-Primary enclosures). All of these cages had metal self feeder and plastic water bottles attached to their walls.
