Old appliances (HVAC and Refrigerator) can contribute to a higher bill. Years ago FPL told me that the Refrigerator uses $15/month by itself. The figures could be entirely different today. You may want to consider an energy audit too. Another thing you can do is have an electrician come out to see if you have inappropriate wiring or an old Federal Pacific panel box. The problem with having an electrician come out is that it will probably run more than the $36 you pay in power bills, especially if the electrician is properly licensed and insured.
One last comment: turning off your power every day may be a factor in your increased bill. I once had my a/c broken for a full two weeks and the bill doubled that month - even though I had no a/c. Once the a/c was fixed, I was able to get my bill down to a normal amount. Why? I have no idea why - but experiment with keeping your power on during the day for a couple of weeks and check you bill online for the daily consumption to see if it works.
