We moved into our house last year in January. Last year was an unusually cold winter for us, some days the temperature never rose above freezing, which is strange for texas. Last year, our electric bill during this very cold time was about $200 a month. This year, it has been one of the most mild winters in recent memory with most days averaging around 68 degrees. This year we are seeing our average electrical bill about 87% more than last year. WE are now paying about $1400 a month.
The only thing that has changed between this year and last year is the installation of our shiny new smart meter which ONCOR claims is working at 99% efficiency. They admit that, "woah, this is a climb from last year." but thats about as much as they will acknowledge it. They haven't done anything to fix the problem except to send someone out to the house to inspect our meter. (which, by the way, is working at "99% efficiency.")
Oncor admits that the smart meter has had some discrepancies amongst users and has experienced a 1% malfunction rate. Actually, Oncor, its more like 20%. LISTEN UP. if more than one person is complaining about the same thing, if there is a class action lawsuit against you, somethings up! Instead of ignoring the problem, or sweeping the issue under the rug, deal with it please! WE ARE BEING EXTORTED!
I have spent countless hours on the phone with people from both Oncor energy and Reliant energy, have spoken to managers and even called the local media. I demand to be compensated for this drastic increase. My roommates are good, honest kids trying to be independent. We work hard, we aren't rich, we have student loans. This isn't fair.

Power meters are rated at a percentage of accuracy...not effieciency.
Revenue grade meters, including smart meters are REQUIRED to be VERY accurate, usually within 0.1% to 0.25%.
You might want to compare the readings on the actual meter with the readings on your bill and make sure they agree. If so, you should watch how fast the readings on your meter are changing.
If the numbers are flying off the dials and impacting on the glass, check for some MAJOR problems at your place. If the readings do NOT agree with the ones on your bill, it COULD be possible they are not getting the info from your meter, but POSSIBLY someone else.
If it turns out that meter is really spinning, try turning off breakers, one at a time...or your marijuana grow lights, until you slow it down.
Also, a malfunction rate is very unlikely to be an accuracy problem, but a failure to reliably send data. Even if the meter doesn't send for awhile, when it does, it will be accurate information.
Check also and see if Oncor's website allows you to track your usage on a daily basis, most do.
Good luck to you.
