After signing up for a 7 day trial, I was surprised to see my account charged for a 3 month service. I emailed them through their customer service page on 10/10/07 requesting an immediate cancellation and a refund. No response was received. Sent another email and received a message on their customer service page that my request to cancel was invalid as a previous request to cancel was already in their system.

On 12/28/07 I sent another email through customer service to cancel and received same response that that my request to cancel was invalid as a previous request to cancel was already in their system. On 1/8/08 my account was charged again for a second 3 month service. Their web site has no phone number on it, but I found the number by using the reverse directory.
I left a message that I must hear from them immediately regarding the problem and wanted a full refund.

I sent 2 more emails on 1/8/08. I noticed that they had an very old email address, so I updated my address on the last email. Each of the emails gave me the response that my request to cancel was invalid as a previous request to cancel was already in their system.

Today, 1/1/08, I received a call from Steve at One Great Family. He says there is no record from me of any request to cancel. This is very interesting, since their computer system keeps telling me I've already requested a cancellation. I have just received the following email from Steve indicating that they will do nothing about the charges and basically don't care. (Not stated, but implied.) I am including my response to him.

BEWARE - your family history may be important to you, but make sure you're dealing with a company that admits their errors and refunds monies when due.

Sorry, this incident hasn't been resolved and won't be until I receive a full refund of $59.90. I find it difficult to believe that you have no record of my attempts to cancel when your own computer system keeps telling me I already have a cancellation in progress.

I have posted your email and my response along with a time line of my attempts to cancel on Ripoffreport.com.

I expect to see a credit of $59.90 on my account within 24 hours.

OneGreatFamily Online Genealogy Subscription Service

AUTHOR: Onegreatfamily.com - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, April 17, 2009

OneGreatFamily is a leader in the burgeoning online family tree market. Established in 1999, we are the only company that does automated matching and merging of family trees into one single family tree. As a subscriber you will gain access to billions of names and on average between 100,00 and 300,000 new names are added each week.

When you subscribe to OneGreatFamily you have the choice of initially signing up for a free 7-day trial whereby you are provided with unlimited access to our database as well as the used of our advanced family-tree software, Genealogy Browser.

Subscribers may in addition elect either a monthly, quarterly or annual subscription. Our standard monthly subscription is $14.95, however, choosing the annual subscription provides a 66 percent discount off the monthly rate (Example: $6.66 x 12 months = $79.95).

In addition, we routinely offer special promotions that further reduce the standard subscription rate which the customer above was fortunate to benefit from. By taking advantage of the promotion, this customer saved an additional $20.00 off the annual subscription rate.

Per our terms and conditions, which each subscriber must agree to in order to register an account, the customer agreed to and accepted that they would not be eligible for a refund of the subscription.

Regardless, if a customer expresses a desire to cancel their subscription they still retain access to their account for all the time in which they have paid for and any personal data they added to our database. In addition, they may continue to use our award winning family-tree software, Genealogy Browser, at no additional cost and continue researching their ancestors on their own.

If you visit our website (OneGreatFamily.com), you will be able to read testimonials from many of our subscribers who have benefitted from our service and who are thrilled at the amount of time which we save them by automatically identifying and merging additional names into their personal family-tree.

here is the offical text from thier website....

If you are seeking to cancel your subscription because either you have had problems with our service or you have not had any success in growing your family tree with our service, we invite you to first speak with a customer service representative. Why PAY for This "Service" When You Can Get it for FREE?

AUTHOR: Helene - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, January 09, 2008

If you are not homebound, you can go check with your public library and you can find ancestry com in many of their online reference database for FREE!You can access it in the library without even having a card FREE OF CHARGE!

Check it out and see what I am talking about!

Also, go to the rootsweb website and post queries about your family on the message boards and see what others have posted there. Rootsweb is FREE of CHARGE!

There are so many GREAT genealogy resources that are FREE of Charge, why did you waste your time with this one?

Cyndi's List has Genealogy boards that are FREE.

I have been researching my family for nearly 40 years and have yet to pay any Internet service a dime because I just don't have it!

Also, Random Acts of Genealogy Kindness is a group of people who will help you over those "brick walls" for a very nominal fee --it depends...

You can google any of these organizations.

You can also go to the First Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints ( the Mormons) Family History Centers and they will help you FOR FREE. You do not have to BE a Mormon to go since they have nights that these centers are open to the public and they will NOT try to convert you! I know because I have been to them many times! They are famous for their many rolls of microfilm where they have information that nobody else has -- and I do mean NOBODY. You have to pay a little bit to rent a roll of microfilm, but that's no big deal either. It's very affordable.

LDS also has a rather good family research site on the Internet.
Check with your public library. It's free.

Check with the funeral homes for information. They are very nice people (EXCEPT IN CALIFORNIA AND INDIANA!) and will tell you what you need to know IF you are related to the person and have a need to know!

The last time I checked, it was FREE to attend the local Genealogy and Historical Society meetings and there might be one where you live.

Good luck, and as we family history searchers say

HAPPY HUNTING!

I hope this has been of some help.
