One Hour A/C Thieves. The service technician tried to tell me that the a/c was out of freon and that it would cost me $525.00 to add freon ,410A, and die . He then told me that he would be back in 3 weeks to check for the leak. I told him to put panel back on and leave A/C alone. Lakeland Florida

 My A/C quit cooling my home. I called one hour air to come out and check out my unit. I left instructions with the receptionist to have the technician to call me before he did any work on the unit. The technician called me and told me that the freon had leaked out due to a leak in the system and that it would need 9 pounds of freon and die. He then stated that he would be back in 3 weeks to locate the leak. I asked how much was this going to cost me and he stated that it would be $525.00 dollars. I asked him how much they charge per pound of freon and he said that they don't charge per pound and he wouldn't say how he came up with that number amount. I told him to reinstall the cover and leave the unit alone and that I would take care of it. I am an industrial mechanic/electrician and I knew by his response that he was trying to rip me off. I can buy 410A freon for $4.00 a lb. I went ahead and called another A/C company to come out and service the unit. The A/C was still under warranty and their was no loss of freon nor a leak. The blower motor was failing under a load. The other company only charged me for labor and all parts were covered under the warranty. The total cost to repair was $164.00. I am thankful to God that I have over 20 years of electrical and mechanical experience to know when someone is scamming me in those areas but I fear for people who aren't.
