I claimed a rebate on Ultra 1GB Secure Digital Media Card via On-Rebate on 5/24/06. The rebate was accepted on 6/14/06. I got a payment on 12/18/06 for $25 as claimed which is six months after rebate submission. The problem occured after I got the checks from them. On-Rebate.com sent me two checks dated 12/18/06 and 12/19/06 and mailed out at different time in separate envelops. On the check it has no product name that I claimed rebate except the company's reference code.
I didn't cash the checks until December 26, 06 evening. On December 27, 06 I got an email from email@example.com informing that "they inadvertently sent me 2 rebate checks for the same rebate application with different dates on them. Both checks have the same unique check number. Only one of these checks will clear the bank. If both checks are deposited the 1st will clear and the 2nd will be returned and I may be subject to any fees my bank charges for returned checks. Please deposit only one of these checks. Then conclude that they apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused."
I emailed back using the address they gave which is firstname.lastname@example.org on the same day I got email. In my email I informed that I just deposited both checkes one day before their email arrived. Could they let both checks go through and I will pay them back for the check that they sent out mistakenly. That way I didn't have to pay for bank fee for returned checks. In the email, I stated that they should have let me know sooner so that I would deposit just one check. However, there's nobody responded to my email.
I then called the company on the same day at 1.20pm (EST) talking with Peero. This man said there's nothing he could help. One check was already void and if there's any fee from my bank, I have to be responsible for it. I told him that this problem could be solved by letting that check passed and I would write them a check to pay back that additional amount. He insisted that there's nothing he could do and it was my fault depositing both checks. I should have known that I should deposit just one since both checks are for the same product. I told him that there's no description of product on the check except the reference code that only the company staffs would understand. He expressed angrily that he couldnt' help and nobody could help me either. Everyone would respond the same way he did. I asked for his last name and he said he would not give me the last name. I told Peero that the company should email sooner but not a week later to inform of the mistake they did. This is really unfair for the customer.
I got so mad that I have to pay fee charged by my bank for a returned check for $6.50 for the mistake that the On-Rebate staff made. I'm very poor and I had to pay fee that should not be my responsibility. Luckily that it's not $32 like regular fee. The return reason that my bank stamped on the check is "REFER to MAKER".
So, I just want to report this poor practice of On-Rebate.com to other consumers that this case could happen to anyone. How come consumer has to be responsible for the mistake that the company staff did. This is not right at all. Also, the rebate check I got is way beyond normal time frame. It's about 6 months to get it which is about 24 weeks. That's not nice at all to take advantage on consumers.
