Be aware that if you enroll within 90 days of a course that still has availability, your enrollment processing fee is the full $500 deposit and not the $150 they state on their website.
On their website, Outward Bound explains that if you apply, you need to pay a $500 deposit of which $150 is non-refundable to cover the enrollment processing fee. They also claim they are a non profit organisation?!?

I enrolled my son April 17th for the High Sierra backpacking course starting June 11th 2017 where there was still availability and this was the only time period that would work in the summer. They required us to pay the $500 deposit before they would process the application. They also stated that I should pay the full course fee even before they would confirm my son could go on the course. About a week after paying the deposit, it became clear that my son had to do his university exams over in June and could not go. I therefore informed Outward Bound that I had to cancel my son's application (note: before having gotten any decision if he was accepted). Outward Bound replied that they would keep the full deposit on the basis that we were cancelling within 90 days of the course. My son hadn't even been accepted yet. The best they could do was to ask me to reconsider if my son would still go on this course. Not only have they lost any chance of getting any future business with my 3 children in the future, I hope this review will be helpful to others who are thinking about enrolling within 90 days of a course.

I am sure that Outward Bound has covered itself legally in the small print, but what a cheap way for an apparent non-profit organisation to grab a little extra money. I hope they are not doing this too often but curious to hear if others had similar experiences.
