PAIGE BRUMMOND : BUYER BEWARE of this horse trader: PAIGE BRUMMOND ,of Donnybrook, Oakes, Minot, North Dakota, sold a horse claiming it was a "very, very gentle, no spook, no buck, safe kids' horse" that previously INJURED an DONNYBRROOK, North Dakota

Paige Brummond sold me a horse in Dec. 2011 for my child that she claimed was safe for kids. Her ad said: 13 yr. old brown AQHA gelding, safe for kids, anyone can ride him! Very gentle 13 yr. old registered AQHA brown gelding. He is registered as a dun, but has turned seal brown with a dorsal stripe. Stands 15 hands and weighs 1200 pounds. He has no vices, easy to catch, load, tack up, etc. He has a true one hand neck rein and will pack inexperienced riders on the trails or in the arena. Pivets nice, easy gaits, stops great. Very, very gentle. No spook or buck! He is current on his vaccinations, worming, trimming and has a current Coggins. He'll make a great family or a youth horse.

The horse was nice & quiet when I picked him up. After getting him home he was spooky, but I made excuses for him such as new place, other horses, windy day, etc. so wasn't too concerned at first. She forgot to bring the brand release so said she'd mail it. When I got it, I noticed she had only had the horse for 1 month. I was under the impression she had him longer and knew him well. Prior to that she bought him, along with some others, at the Billings horse sale in Nov. 2011 from Amy Heitland from Iowa. I called Amy for more info. She said the same things as Paige, only she added that the horse had also been a "lesson horse" for kids.

Regardless, I planned to ride him quite a bit to be sure of him, before putting my child on him, but he never settled down like I thought he would or got over his spookiness. When riding him he acted like he was going to blow up at any second. I tracked down the original owner on his papers who owned the horse for several years. She informed me that she had just sold the horse in July 2011 after being injured and hospitalized by him for the last time, and her husband insisted she sell the "psycho horse" or he would shoot it. She said the horse would spook for no reason and blow up bucking with no warning. He had injured her badly enough to require hospitalization 3 separate times! She was shocked and disgusted to hear her horse had wound up on the horse-trading circuit and was being passed off as a safe kids' horse when she considered him to be dangerous and unpredictable.

Needless to say, there was no way I'd ever put my kid on that horse, much less ride him myself anymore after hearing that. He wasn't worth the time or trouble trying to correct his behavior. I hadn't been looking for a bronc for my child to ride. I was looking for a safe kids' horse, of which Paige assured me he was! I tried contacting Paige. She wouldn't return messages, letter, e-mails so I ended up trading the horse to a guy for a different horse. I was honest about mine. He was honest about his. Two crappy horses neither of us really wanted, but traded eachother for anyway. The psycho horse I traded to him he said would end up in a dog food bag, as he wouldn't pass that horse off onto anyone! That's exactly where he belongs before ending up killing someone.

Seven months after dealing with Paige I FINALLY reached her by phone. I told her about psycho horse. She said the horse was fine when she sold him to me and if I had a problem I should have contacted her right away. I had been trying, but how can you contact someone who apparently screens their calls, doesn't return messages and doesn't want to be contacted because they KNOW why you're trying to contact them? She said she never got my messages, my letter, my e-mail - even though I got the receipt to sender - proving that she did. I told her I'd take the word of the women who owned the horse for several years rather than hers, since she only owned him for 1 month, and that the horse was NOT fine when she sold him to me. I asked her how she can even look at herself in the mirror and told her to think about what could have happened to my child if I had put my child on that horse. She acted like she couldn't have cared less. Not her problem anymore. She got her money. I got screwed.

To make matters worse, I found out the horse I got in trade had changed hands a few times, but had originated from Paige, as well. *&$## Dang my luck! She bought him in Billings (possibly also from Amy Heitland). I called the original owner of that horse and found out the horse has EPM. The guy who traded him to me had no idea. He said he was fine one day and droopy-lipped the next so figured he just got kicked by another horse or something. Found out that the horse was never used in a feedlot or for roping calves as Paige claimed in her old ad for him that I found on-line. You can't use a bit in his mouth, but I've ridden him bareback with a halter just fine. Another reject horse from Paige Brummond that I don't have much use for - yet a small step-up from the psycho horse.

It's too bad there are people like Paige Brummond and Amy Heitland selling horses that they know nothing about, have never ridden, or know everything about, but hide the truth and make up phony BS just to make a fast buck. I was naive to believe ones' word and a handshake still meant something and in no way would someone sale a dangerous horse that they knew was going to be ridden by a young child. I should have gotten a written guarantee or the option to try for a week or two before buying. I have sold horses that way and feel that if someone has nothing to hide they should be willing to do that. The first ride or two isn't always enough to know for sure what you're getting; especially if the horse is drugged like you hear so many stories of people doing. I should have asked for the name of the original owner on the registration papers to get the history beforehand. Had I of done that first, I would have passed on that horse. I'm lucky I didn't wind up in the hospital like the other owner and am so very, very grateful that I never put my child on that horse. I'm sure Paige and Amy get lucky and sell a good horse here and there, but that doesn't make up for the dangerous ones they try to pass off as being safe for kids to ride. In my book, you can't sink much lower than that.
