I checked my credit report with Equifax on December 1, 2004 and I noticed that Palasades Collection Agency had put a note on my record stating that I had an open and overdue account with AT&T. Besides the address of the company and a partial enumeration of an account number, no other information was provided. I called the phone number listed on my credit report and they transfered me to the corresponding department.

I gave the person who answered my call the partial account number that I had and my name. The address that they had on record was not my present address, but rather a previous one. They were able to pull up the record. I asked what they knew about the account in question and all they could say was that it came from AT&T, it had my name on it, an amount, and an address (which was out-dated). They said that I had an account that was overdue and it needed to be paid. I told them that I never had an account with AT&T. They said it was impossible, because they had proof that I had a debt with AT&T. The conversation went nowhere and I asked if there was anyone else I could talk with. They said I should call AT&T's credit department.

I called AT&T's credit department, but they didn't have any more information regarding the account than Palasades had. The woman who answered at AT&T told me that by law, they were not required to keep any information regarding its customers for more than 18 months. It is odd that there are ongoing collections processes against me, yet they have no information about this account in question. They told me that it was not something that they could deal with, and that my only alternative course of action is to issue an inquery with Equifax.

I requested the investigation at Equifax, but I didn't stop there. I also notified Fox6 in San Diego after seeing a report about credit scams that aired on 12/8/2004. A man from Fox 6 recommended to me that I file this report here at ripoffreport.com, as well as file a report with the California Attorney General.

That takes us to the end of this report.
