Capital One sent me a pre-approval letter for up to $30,000 towards the purchase of a new car or truck. It did not have an interest rate, just that it was going to be 'fixed' and only availble for purchases at Parkland Chevrolet. I tried calling Capital One for more information but it only led me to recorded line that repeated the same information that was on the pre-approval letter.

I then called another Capital One Auto Finance number which led me to a live person. I told her what was on the letter and without even taking my information such as the confirmation code she starts reading from a script or something and tells me exactly what's on the letter. I asked her what the APR was and she said that is up to the dealer to tell me. This is funny because the letter not only says I'm pre-approved but states that since I've been Pre-Approved I have the convienence of shopping like I have cash and do not have to fill out any more dealer credit applications.

I called the dealer and told them about my letter and thier affiliation with Capital One and they said they would have to take an application over the phone. I was puzzled because the letter specifically stated that i would NOT have to fill out any more applications. He said that they just need to update my information to send to Capital One so they can stand behind thier original offer to me.

I agreed and he said that they were NOT going to run my credit as Capital One already did that before they sent me a pre-approval letter. He took down all my personal information over the phone and NEVER called me back. I finally called a couple of hours later and he said that he gave all my information to his manager and that he'll "call me back if he has any positive news". He NEVER called me back after 6 hours. I finally called back again and told him to forget it. This man named Dave in Sales said, "Good Luck Mam" and hung up in my face!

How rude of these people to :
#1. Take down my personal information and NEVER call me back.
#2. Say something as unprofessional as that.

I blame Capital One for sending this deceiving offer as if I had a blank check and all I had to do was pick my car out and "Drive home today" as they put it. To top it all off....THEY RAN MY CREDIT and caused an inquiry!!!!

3.# They lied to me outright about what they were doing with my information!

I'm sorry you have had such a bad experience with a Capitol one letter. The dealership handled it the wrong way. I have done business with Cap 1 for a long time and have done many pre-approval sales with them at various dealerships. The letter is real by the way. One of the few I know of that actually has an approval by a bank behind it. The dealership is not supposed to take an application over the phone. As a matter of fact there should be an application on the back of the letter you fill out when you go to the dealer.

Your credit is not supposed to be pulled either. Your already approved with them...no need to pull credit and Capitol One doesn't want the dealership to do that. No one will ever tell you the interest rate ahead of time because so many factors determine that. The finance manager must send them the actual vehicle you want to purchase to get an exact interest rate. They have some really low competitive interest rates and some are on the higher side. Depends on your credit.

I don't know how long ago you received this letter but it is usually good for 30 days. If you are interested in purchasing a vehicle and have had a hard time in the past getting approved for credit it is a good opportunity. There are a few rare occasions where you may be denied if something has changed on your credit but I have only seen maybe 10 out of hundreds. I would recommend going to the dealership and talking to a manager to let them know what happened. You obviously talked to a moron. Capitol One would be very upset at your treatment. Sometimes their reps are at the dealership during the sale if so I would make sure I told them.
