PayTrust is an internet bill payment service offered by Intuit, the makers of TurboTax, Quickbooks and a few other financial software products. The service allows anyone with a checking or savings account to manage and pay their bills online. It works by signing up for the service, providing your bank account information and entering in biller details. You can setup reoccuring payments, pay 3rd parties, personal people, etc.

Sound like a useful service, especially if your bank does not offer online bill pay, right? Think again. My experience with this company has been downright horrible. The company not only charges a monthly service fee in addition to per-transaction fees (there are several plans available, but most follow this scheme), but they automatically deduct said fees -- without authorization -- from your bank account. They "schedule" these payments themselves, giving you a few days to cancel them, if you catch them in time.

Sounds nice, huh? But it gets better -- not only do they dip into your bank account whenever they want, but they also will charge a $20 "NSF" fee if they fail to collect on their service fees. Such is the case with myself.

Shortly after signing up with their service, which is really just a mediocre version of what most banks offer for free, I decided to cancel. The user interface sucks and despite what they say, they don't get electronic statements from as many billers as they claim. There is also a delay in sending payments, as the company must wait for funds to clear your bank (2-3 days) BEFORE cutting any check or posting any electronic payment. With most banks, there is usually no delay. In addition, I switched banks to one that offered online billpay, making the service worthless. After examining their web site for a good 20 minutes looking for a cancel link, I finally e-mailed their support requesting my account be canceled.

I received an automated reply back and didn't hear back from the company until a few months later, alerting me that I had a pending payment. Shocked, I attempted to log in to my old "canceled" account. Not only was the account not canceled, there was a "balance owed", corresponding to several months of $2.95 service fees as well as several $20 "NSF" fees. In the time that past, my old account had closed and they were unable to collect on their fees and in turn incurred more fees.

They were honestly expecting me to pay them money for nothing. I wasn't having it. I promptly shot an e-mail to customer service, who explained their policy and reminded me I had agreed to a terms of service upon signing up, and also stated they had never received my request to cancel, and even if they had received it, due to "security" I could not cancel my account unless I called them directly.

Wait a minute. I can open an account online, but can't cancel it the same way? That really irked me. Not only were they now refusing to cancel the account, but they were stating I owed them money, and would continue to owe them money for no service at all. I also didn't remember reading anywhere about such NSF fees. I went to their web site looking for the terms of service, and it was not available anywhere [note: this has since been fixed, after I e-mailed about it, but is still par for the course for this company]. I had to actually go through a "mock" sign-up process to see the terms of service before canceling. Sure enough, there was a clause buried near the bottom of the long-winded text box. However, i can't help but think they may have added this "feature" in after I signed up -- there was also a clause stating they could change the terms at any time.

I refuse to do business with a company that operates such a service. With banks offering free online bill pay and many other ways to pay (free prepaid debit cards, etc.) I'm sure paytrust has fallen on hard times and probably only time will tell when Intuit decides to let the drain out of this filthy tub.

Until then, my best advice is to avoid this company at all costs. Do not sign up for their service, or you may end up in a situation like mine. I probably used the service a few times and paid a few bills, and now that is costing me almost as much as the bills I paid. Just the mere fact they automatically schedule payments to themselves should be cause for alarm. Instead, look for a bank that offers a good online bill pay feature, or pay bills using a prepaid debit card with the feature.

15 year plus, pleased customer

Just want to say I am charged a monthly fee of 12.95 with 30 transactions/mo that has always covered my needs and have never had a problem.  Set up takes a few minutes, but once completed I have never had to think about paying the bill again. Can set a limit on the dollar payment and receive notification if monthly bill exceeds the amount stated which adds a layer of security. Prefer this to giving my bank complete control over it's funds. The entire process has been so liberating for me I just felt I had to say something.  I'm sorry for your experience but can't help but wonder if there is a user error or you chose a plan that does not suit your needs.

I did read what you wrote. I may have lost focus a little bit when you were upset they had the audacity to bill you for their service but regardless...

I think you had a bad experience and just want to flame the company.

Your experience with this company and mine are not the same. I don't mean to diminish your bad experience but its important to note there are plenty of people who take advantage of the service and are very satisfied.

I have never been charged for anything other than the $12.95 a month fee for the service. This covers 30 transactions a month. If you execute more transactions than that they charge an extra 50 cents or something.. More than enough to accommodate my billing needs. The times i did have questions and contacted tech support they were very helpful. I never had any issues with payments not arriving on time.. I never had problems with mysterious charges.. I recommend their service to everyone.

Since i have been using them for many years.. and you have not, I think its fair to present a different perspective.. Not only do i manage all my bills through Paytrust.. All my bills are automated and split into biweekly payments to align with my regular paycheck. It works flawlessly. Its a little sad to see money go at as fast as it goes in.. but that's besides the point.. everyone has to pay the man.

but I didn't want to write an advertisement i simple wanted to offer a different point of view. I really don't know what to say about all your angry comments.. other than. maybe Paytrust isn't right for you.

Did you read any of what I wrote? You failed to address the numerous other points I mentioned such as changing their terms of service, failing to provide terms of service for inspection, charging large fictitious 'NSF' fees when their $2.00 self-scheduled service charge didn't clear (due to closed account), and failure to close my account when requested numerous times.

I do have numerous services setup as reoccurring charges, including -- a gym membership -- and have no problems. That's because I have agreed up front to the charge and made well aware of it. Paytrust seems to think it's okay for them to dip into any bank account you have registered with the site at their convenience. They don't even send you an e-mail before or after they attempt the transaction, like I said I found out after receiving a statement in excess of $90 (mostly comprised of numerous 'NSF' fees for a single $2.00 failed charge)! This is the same behavior as some of the unscrupulous credit card companies, whom make most of their income from fees.

All this after they were instructed to cancel the account. It took involving my bank to finally resolve the issue, and my bank agreed PayTrust lacked the proper authorization to debit my account (the exact rules state there must be an agreement stating the date(s) and exact charges that will be coming out, and the authorization is void immediately upon consumer request to cancel). PayTrust cannot simply decide when and certainly cannot continue billing after they have been informed their services are no longer required.

My point isn't that PayTrust isn't a useful service for some rare situations where you need to receive paper statements, its just to be weary about some of their fee practices and refusal to do such things as close your account.

YOu dont speak for everyone.....

While i suppose its possible you have never experienced the joys of automated billing i do find it a little hard to believe. Ever had a gym membership? Many Gyms require you to allow them to autobill your credit card. I'm sure there are many other examples.

Unlike you.. I have used Paytrust for the past 5 years and find both there customer service to be excellent as well as the quality of their service incredible..

Is it possible you dont understand the service? Paytrust isn't just an online bill service.. it is much more than that. It is a mail center. What this means for those bills that arrive in paper form.. they arrive to a po box in South Dakota where they are scanned added to my account and then shredded.

I can view these bills as well as any electronic bills online and make payment from any of my bank accounts. If you choose you can get a cd at the end of the year with a copy of every bill in it.

I have a very busy schedule and being able to keep tabs on bills anywhere in the country is fantastic. not to mention if i move.. or change banks.. guess what i dont have to change my address with any companies.. oh and yea i dont have to shred my mail.. I also have setup all my bills to be paid bimonthly in sync with my paycheck.

I recommend them to everyone..

fyi if you have ADD this service is a life saver!

I would like to see what happens when you try to get a gym membership! haha

cheers!
