A 'Miss Thompson' called our yesterday, leaving a recorded message and mis-pronouncing our easy to pronounce name and mixing up our middle initials (later she pronounced our name irately to me on the phone by changing letters around and making it a filthy word).

The second call was this morning from Miss Thompson. She stated that I had opened an account with a credit card company several years ago and that I still owed that bank $7,000+ (credit card). I informed her that I had paid off that account and then closed the account.

Miss Thompson then told me that my former husband's name was on this account as well, and if I denied that I owed the money, she would contact my former husband. She then stated that if my former husband denied any doings with this account, she would then file a fraud charge against him for potentially opening the account under false pretenses using my name, and that he then would have to counter file a fraud charge against me to get out of it. Amazing complicated tactic to frighten me into paying the imaginary debt.

My current husband happens to be a credit officer with a large well known worldwide bank. He immediately checked our credit bureau file, and there was no record of owing any 'past' balance. Miss Thompson then accused him of taking that information off of our account, which is impossible and of course rediculous..he has no power to do that.

What I thought was interesting, this woman gave my personal financial information to my current husband over the telephone before speaking with me. That just is not done by creditors in my experience. They would insist on speaking with me personally.

I asked Miss Thompson to send me a certified letter with the alleged debt described in it. She said she had mailed me something already, but strangely I had never received this information yet she would not mail me something again, certified, so that I was SURE to receive it (why?, she never let me ask her).

When I asked Miss Thompson why I had not received a bill at the other 2 addresses that I've lived at with forwarding addresses, why it is just coming up now after so many years, she gave me some mixed up broken fact-ed story about the company was in limbo before it was purchased by another bank. However, I recall the bank switching names, and I continued to receive a bill with the new name of the company on the bill..and paid the debt off, closed the account. There was no pleasing this woman, she was insistent that I owed the debt.

Miss Thompson also seemed to have quite a bit of personal information about me, that I had been separated, social security number, former addresses, etc. She had the first digits of my ss number and wanted the last four, which I didn't offer, being wary of this whole phone call.

Miss Thompson accused me of using foul language (I believe I said 'hell' in a sentence), she accused me of being a mean person, started to threaten me with what she was 'going to do since I was so mean'..and I proceeded to hang up the phone on her. She turned my last name into 'foul language' as well (ridiculing me) and she cut me off verbally so I could not ask her appropriate questions for my information by shouting at me. I felt threatened by this woman but not enough to not recognize fraud..some poor soul out there hopefully won't get caught up with this and actually believe them.

When I calmed down and thought this through, I tried calling Miss Thompson back, she said that 'we had already spoken' and she hung up on me.. twice.

I proceeded to telephone my former credit card account/bank. The creditor/bank/credit card company said this phone call had to be fraud, and that my account was paid in full, and closed and all was fine. They had records of my account under the former bank's name and the current bank's name, years back.

Then I called our local police department and filed a fraud report with them, contacted my credit bureau and put a fraud alert flag on our file. I also telephoned my former husband alerting him to this scam as they had his personal information as well. I'm not sure what to do next since this situation crosses state lines.
