On Fr. April 18 2008 I had an appt. to get my Old English Sheepdog Groomed. It is only on this Friday because I was blown off the preivious friday because of the "groomer" being ill. When my wife showed up at 7:15 am she had to wait outside untill 7:30 am as Petco does not allow employees to clock in early. She then took the dog in and the supposedly "professional Groomer" refused to groom the dog stating the "job was too big" for them to handle and the dogs hair was matted. My wife then called me and brought the dog home after losing an hour of work for this.

I called the "groomer" and asked why they were not working on my dog, and was told the same thing. I then asked if she was a "professional" and what her job was and was given excuse after excuse. I then told her I would be on the phone with corporate within 25 minutes to complain, and told her that she was in no way a "professional".

So this "groomer" called and DELIBERATLY lied to corporate stating that profanities were used on her. This was done only to protect her job. AT NO TIME WERE PROFANITIES WERE USED! When wy wife called customer service to complain they were more concerned over the "groomers" call than the customer that was treated lousy.

If you care about your pet (and I am sure you do) AVOID PETCO FOR ANY REASON YOU CAN THINK OF!! all they want to do is sell you over priced items for your pet, not help keep them healthy

#2 UPDATE EX-employee responds

I agree with the groomer

AUTHOR: Pearlheartgtr - (U.S.A.)

I have worked in the retail pet trade for over 18 years. I worked as a groomer (not at Petco) and for several years and at Petco as the fish and reptile specialist.

People don't seem to understand how much work actually goes into grooming ANY dog, not just big hairy messes like OES'. They also don't seem to understand the concept of properly brushing their dog between groomings or regularly taking the dog to a groomer.

And these same people expect the groomer to simply brush the dog out! Not so!

As the other groomer mentioned, brushing out mats is a painful and stressful situation for the dog which can potentially turn dangerous for the groomer AND the dog.

Example: The dog doesn't like being brushed or is in pain, so he bites the groomer. Or the dog flips out because he doesn't like being brushed or is in pain and falls off the table; which can lead to bumps, bruises, or fractured limbs if he isn't choking because he is hanging by the noose.

De-Matting can also cause skin irritations or brush burns (not to mention the skin irritations the dog could have BECAUSE of excessive matting). And when customers see that, they immediately blame the groomer and run to the vet, who will also blame the groomer, and demand their money back because of their own ignorance and negligence.

More than likely, the groomer told your wife that the dog would need to be shaved down, that de-matting would be too big of a job, and your wife refused to have the dog stripped. Every groomer I know of has never turned down a dog because it was matted, they only refused to de-mat them if the matting is really bad and beyond help. I'd check your wife's facts.

Besides, Petco groomers are told not to de-mat dogs (unless it is very light matting that could easily be brushed out) because of the potential dangers and health concerns for the dog and to themselves.

#3 UPDATE Employee

Groomer's Side

AUTHOR: Bongoqueen - (U.S.A.)

You sound completely inconsiderate. Did you ever think about what you wanted from the groomers point of view? As a groomer, I can tell you some jobs are too big for some people.
You say you were "blown-off" because the groomer was sick. You weren't blown-off, and being a groomer, I can tell you, we HATE calling in sick. Not only do we loose money for that day, but we also understand that it hurts our customer standings. We want to maintain our customer relationships because without you and your pets, we know we don't have a job. It is rare when we call in sick.
If your appointment was not until 7:30, thank you for showing up early, but I would not expect you to start your job early for me, especially if you couldn't.
An Old English Sheepdog is a HUGE job. If you allow your dogs coat to get matted, the job only gets bigger. Sometimes it is too stressful for dogs to get those mats brushed out. It is painful. If that was the case and the dog needed to be shaved, some groomers cannot do that. You have to be certified to cut dogs hair. Bather-brushers at Petco do just that. They Bathe and Brush. They don't cut hair.

I know I am always a professional and I treat my clients and their pets with respect. I am not afraid to turn something away because I don't think i can handle it though. I never want to hurt a dog by over brushing it, and I don't want to hurt myself by doing a large dog with no one to help me lift it into the tub. I'm sure your groomer did not come up with "excuses." If you were listening, she probably gave valid reasons why she was unable to do your dog.
