I began an auto policy with Progressive Insurance in 2009, at which time an error was made in the processing of driver information, specifically, my driver's license number; a digit was added. As a result of this error, Progressive Insurance charged my a $183.00 "fee" for being unable to access a driver's report. This fee was charged to me without my knowledge every time I renewed my policy (every 6 months) since 2009. I became aware of this fee only when I called to cancel my policy in May of 2013.

The Progressive Insurance service representative I spoke with at that time stated that multiple e-mails had been sent to me by Progressive Insurance informing me of the need to rectify the error, dating back to 2012; he provided specific dates these emails were sent. I have saved every email sent to me from Progressive Insurance since I began the policy in 2009. Although I did receive emails from Progressive on the dates the representative mentioned, these emails made no mention of an error, an inability to access a driver's record, or a fee being levied as a result of missing or incorrect data. In fact, these emails only informed me it was time to renew my policy.

The Progressive Insurance representative also informed me that the existence of the error was made known to me through the policy web page. I logged onto the web page to confirm this and asked the service representative to guide me to the page on the site where notification of this error and related fee was located, which he did. However, there was no such notification on the page. The representative stated that because he had just rectified the error, I would be unable to view the notification of error and subsequent fee from that point on.

I have no way of proving how this error came about. I can prove, however, that I was never notified of the error or the fee I was being charged as a result of the error. If I had received notification, I would have corrected the error and saved myself a total of $1830.00 over the course of the last 5 years. I believe Progressive Insurance knowingly and purposefully kept this information from me in order to charge an extra fee.

I strongly discourage anyone from doing business with Progressive Insurance. This company is unscrupulous at best and I hope that everyone who has been victimized my Progressive Insurance in the same way will come forward and something can be done to recover the money that has been ripped off by this company.
