I got a quote from Michelle at Progressive Van Lines for my move from San Francisco to London in early March 2005 for $2402 based on an estimated shipment of 300 cubic feet.

Everything went great; the movers arrived on the specified day at the specified time and loaded up our belongings. They did however; insist on repackaging all of my furniture for an additional charge of $330. I was told that Progressive would store my shipment for 4 weeks free of charge and then I should receive the shipment 4-6 thereafter.

When I hadn't heard anything from Progressive by the beginning of June I contacted them requesting an update. They said there appeared to be a problem with the size and my shipment was actually 375 cubic feet and I therefore owed them an additional $543.75 which I had to pay before I could receive delivery.

I argued with them and asked for a manager to call me back to justify how the driver had agreed that the shipment was very close to 300 cubic feet and suddenly it grew to 375 cubic feet.

I never received a call back and called numerous times and eventually received the following email from Limor on June 24th:

"We understand that you have a problem with the extra cubic feet that you have and the amount that you still owe us. The driver cant measure your cubic feet we are doing it in the warehouse and you have 75 cubic feet more then the estimate so the balance that you still owe is $543.75, in order for us to ship it to London you need to pay the balance, if you like you can remeasure it on the delivery. If you have any more questions please give us a call at 408-944-9340 ext: 300 or 301"

Progressive were not standing down on their demand for the additional payment and threatened to charge storage if I didn't pay. This went on for another week until I finally paid the amount on June 29th as my belongings were being held hostage. On July 12th they finally say they received payment and I should receive my shipment in 4-6 weeks.

After many calls and emails I finally received my belongings today, October 18th. I have received no explanation for the extended delay. The local delivery company measured the shipment last week and I find that my shipment is only 277 cubic feet. I have been overcharged $710. I have sent 3 emails in the last week and have called but thus far have received no response.

Progressive Van Lines have not once called me throughout this whole fiasco and I've generally had to send at least 3 emails before getting any response. Any time that I managed to speak to anyone, Dana, Limor, or Anita, they have been rude and unhelpful. They have made my blood boil and I will be taking further action.

This company deserved to be put out of business ASAP. Do not use this company.
